What is it like when you are away from home for a long period of time?

I always envy people who have the guts to leave their hometown and start an adventure somewhere else. But what is it like? Is it very exciting, worth to do it; or it's a good experience but you still prefer going back home? What are your feelings? Lonely sometimes? or much better than staying home?

It's hard, but in the best sense of the word. You are pushing yourself to experience something new and step outside of your comfort zone. I've been living in Paris since this past August and will be here until 2013! Long stays away from home seem daunting, but if you keep yourself busy, travel often, and use all of the available technology to stay in touch with family and friends, you'll be so happy you decided to stretch your horizons :) Plus there are tons of other people in your situation who can lend advice and help you get adjusted to your new surroundings.

I think that leaving for a "long time" (however you choose to define it) is easy, but actually MOVING with no plans to return to your home country is an entirely different issue.  It is exciting, scary, lonely, challenging, freeing, and just about any other adbjective you could think of.
You ask if its worth it leave your hometown and start an adventure somewhere else - yes, it absolutely can be, but I think that depends so much on your personal circumstances.  For me, I came to England to be with my husband, so of course its worth it.  I am not so sure it would be worth it (for me at least) to leave your family and everything familiar and comfortable just for the adventure of it.
