Hi everyone, bit of advice please.  We are going to retire to Gambia next year but having read the leaflet with malaria tablets they say do not take for prolonged periods of time.  As I seem to be a mosquito magnet some form of meds need to be taken.  What do other expats in Gambia do to over come this problem and am I reading more into the leaflet than is necessary.  We are going to our UK GP for advice but think you all might give us better advice, Thanks in advance.  Sue

There are no reported side effects from the long term use of doxycycline, which is easily available from pharmacies in Gambia. Many ex-pats don't take anything, relying on insect repellent, BOP insecticide and mosquito nets. Including garlic and Marmite in your diet is supposed to make you smell nasty to mosquitoes so they avoid you.
If you do get malaria - it's no big deal for adults! The clinics recognise the symptoms and know how to treat malaria. Three injections over 18 hours and that's it.

Thank you so much for your reply.  You have put our minds are ease and offered some very valuable information.  Won't be long now 2016 is coming so fast and we are so looking forward to the move.  All the best Sue
