Cuenca Bus Owners Seek 17-Centavo Fare Hike, Dispute Rider Survey

A spokesman for the bus owners in Cuenca says their proposal to increase the basic fare form 25 centavos to 42 centavos would just catch up with inflation. The 25-centavo fare has been the norm since 2002.

Student associations and a barrio or neighborhood federation conducted a recent rider survey which has been presented to Cuenca's mayor.

The survey shows the following results in which 2,500 riders rated Cuenca bus service...

Fair 59 percent

Poor 22 percent

Good 13 percent

The bus owners spokesman says the survey was "rigged and prejudiced." He says a neutral party would have to conduct such a survey for it to be taken seriously. However, he admits that Cuenca buses are in poor repair and many of them should be replaced.

The city is paying for the wi-fi upgrade, and plans to collect ad revenues from web providers to offset the cost.

According to the column, Cuenca buses will offer wi-fi service starting in early 2016... and the Tranvía tram system will offer it when its service is rolled out in the second half of the year.
