For all of the info. Have read so many of your posts,
The usuals on here. I have finally dared to put up a post.
I've gone threw the wholeeee process of selling my home,
To running crazy selling, packing, giving things away, throwing
Stuff away. All the emotions of this great adventure that we will
Be experiencing in just a few more days. There are so many
Emotions and fears of leaving la familia behind. My sons the
Grandson, parents, sister, friends.  Its alot to take in.
But here i am and ready for what ever is to come my way.
Can't wait to be in the warm sun, it has gotten awfully cold here
In N.Y.  I do have one questions in mind, later on i will ask others.
Does anybody know how i can find out how to calculate the cost
At the port of San Juan when i do pick up my car there.
Thank you so much!!! PUERTO RICO here i come!!
   Gracias

Welcome....My goodness you must be so excited! I don't have an answer to your question but I encourage you to start a new thread with questions and if you'd like to share your experiences of setting up a home in PR, we'd love to hear about.  I'm envious of everyone who is already done this process.  I still have a couple of girls who are 20/21 and not quite independent just yet but we hope to do some long term renting.  Good luck with everything  :top:

Check back on some of the treads, I saw the web site a few months back posted here, you enter your VIN or the information about the year, make, model and the web site gives you a good estimate.

Crowley is a popular transporter of vehicles to PR departing Jacksonville--I think that's the only port any of them use if you are doing FL. Another Crowley port around NY/NJ? There aren't many shippers doing it anywhere anyway.

Not sure if the Hacienda's (the PR tax people you will deal with) official calculator is on their site, but if you begin emailing with Crowley, they will for sure lead you to it.

Hacienda's calculator was not user friendly, not available at all at times, my cars model #'s were not recognized, and it is in Spanish, the official lingo of PR though in USD of course.

I remember cross checking shipping prices between Crowley and the few others that are doing it and they were either the best or right up there. It was the PR port side benefits that impressed me, the tax offices, etc are walking distance to Crowley's offices and they will direct you.

I know you want to know how much the Hacienda will charge, so you need the official calculator at least for a rough idea.

When I had a few technical questions and I started calling & emailing Crowley, top notch response in terms of time and substance, even got their bosses involved when the first guy didn't know, and the boss' boss. Within a day. It is a huge company.

I'd bet if you gave Crowley your make and model and whatever that  they'd give you a rough idea. It's mathematical??? And/or at least email the link.

Also, I remember goggling general terms on the issue and quite a few items popped up including several "this was my experience" links. And a few posts like that on Expat.com but you will have to dig a little.

Here's a starter thought--the car must be 100% empty thru and thru other then stock equipment, washed very recently, -1/4 fuel.

I am sure you will post what happened with you.

Dgdlaw,
Thank you for your info on transporting my car.
I will be shipping with P.R car transport which leaves
out of Pennsauken N.J via CROWLEY.
They only sail out once a week on Mondays.
I was not able to obtain any info on export tax in
san juan. I will find out once i arrive there.
Lots to do when we get there.
Thank you for your info. I will post more
As time goes by.  Nice evening to you.

I am not sure if the government office will take a US check or not, they should but I never done that, open a bank account as soon as you can and deposit your US check, in about two weeks it should clear and use a local check to pay. This may not be an issue, but just in case since the car will likely take a couple of weeks or so to arrive.

Welcome to Puerto Rico. I'm sorry I don't info on the cost of getting your car but I think that if you look back in the forum, that question was asked and answered a while back.

I see that you are from Huntington? We are also from Long Island. Lastly Selden, before that Coram, Nesconset and Smithtown.  I miss NY and my grandkids but hey, this is the life here. With the sun and sand, it makes it better. I don't miss the snow and cold and if I do, I can always get on a plane, ha ha.

We have been here for 1 1/2 years and love it. I was born in NY but my husband was born in San German and went there at the age of 2.  So we are both bilingual which makes the transition much easier. Do you own a house in Patillas or looking for one? We have a friend who is currently looking for a place in either Patillas or Salinas.

Anyway Good Luck with your move.

Tonie,
Hello, and thank you for your welcome. Wow nice to
Know someone on here so close to my home town.
Your words are so positive, i am hoping this is the same way
I will feel after arriving and plus giving it some time. We are
Not buying a home immediately, we plan on renting a house.
Maybe in the future. Right now just want to relax and enjoy this
Beautiful tropical island..just thankful and relieved that we sold our
House in 6 months, was sweating it there for a moment.
thank god we are bilingual like yourselfs, that does make things
A whole lot easier. Well congratulations to you on being there
for 1 1/2 yrs, you sound very happy. .
Well hope to read you again soon.   🌹 muy amable

Well I just got here in November and had my 2002 Dodge Ram 2500 pick up shipped over and it cost me 1,500 in hacienda taxes to get it to me, it all depends on the age of the vehicle and the worth, they then  calculate your tax on those  parameters and that's what you pay. Hope this helps you

Spencerazac

I also shipped with Crowley but out of Jacksonville, I shipped my truck and a boat, about 3,000 to ship both here and about the same in Hacienda tax to pick them up, it took about 2 weeks from Jacksonville to port of San Juan but make sure you have all documents, SS card, Registrations, ect... And you will need to go to two other places not including Crowley to get everything cleared, good luck.

dafa

Welcome to Puerto Rico!  I've just gone through the process a few weeks ago.  The website you're looking for is https://siscon.hacienda.gobierno.pr/Sis … 1Form.aspx .  This is where you can put in your car's VIN number and find out how much the import tax will be.

At the colecturia, you can pay the taxes either in cash or with a credit card.

It takes a week for your car to ship down from NJ and then 2-4 days before you can pick up the car at the Crowley terminal.

Good luck!

Figz

Hello again, quick update on my car , it should be arriving
Friday, then i will be able to pick it up on monday, as the
Port will be closed over the weekend. I finally was able to get a hold
Of la hacienda (for taxes) and to my surprise its going to cost 1400.00
To get it out of the port. I wish i would of sold my car back in N.Y.
And bought an s.u.v here, the roads where im at are hilly, curvy,
Rugged at times. So i feel a higher car would be better. My chevy
Malibu is lower to the ground. Ppl word of advice- follow your instincts.
Alot of people told us "bring your car", its gong to cost about 2600.00
To ship this car

ReyP

The transport seems to range around 1200 to 1400 regardless of vehicle type based on other posts, the killer is the tax at hacienda, I believe you mention it was to be 1400 at hacienda. What type of car and what year is it?

Figz

Its a 2009 chevy malibu. Honestly i loved my car in N.Y.
Here i wish i had an s.u.v.

Figz

Rey.. Imagine if i had a new car and luxury style wonder what that
would of cost

dafa

It really depends on your car and what you're looking for.  We also live in the hills and had an older, but very low mileage car.  I looked for a car to purchase in PR but it turned out to be less expensive to ship our car when I compared the mileage and condition of the cars.  Just do your research before making a decision.

ReyP

When you get the plates / marbete you have to pay the compulsory 99 dollars a year insurance.
Anybody with private Full cover car insurance?
How happy are you with the full coverage and what company are you using?

dafa

We use Securos Multiples.  It was about $170/year for full coverage ($100/$300k) and they gave us a $60 rebate back from paying the compulsory insurance with the marbete.

Schuttzie

Dafa, that sounds like a wonderful deal for insurance~

dafa

It's amazing compared to the price we pay back in Massachusetts!

londonpride

Thanks for the info dafa.

$100k max each person, 300k total per occurrence for your liability/your fault coverage. So 5 people in the car that you hit, max coverage is 100k for any one person 300k total for all you injured.  $170 is cheap for this liability protection. I wonder if there are liability "caps" in PR, I need to check that.

How about your collision coverage--fixing your car if someone hits you or you hit someone?

Any Medpay coverage--payment for medical bills for you or your occupants? Standard stateside, at least has to be offered. Regardless of fault.

Any Under-insured coverage? The guy that hits you has the PR minimum liability coverage of $4,000 but your injuries are way over that amount--any underinsured coverage? Now standard coverage  stateside, has to be offered along with uninsured coverage.

Thanks again.

dafa

This was the highest amount of insurance that we could purchase.  I'm waiting to get the full policy back (it has to go up to Massachusetts and then forwarded to us here), so I'll post more once I get the paperwork.  The mandatory insurance here is $4,000 that comes with the marbete (inspection sticker).

londonpride

OK thanks. I spent the last hour goggling car insurance issues in PR and really there is a dearth of info as to what the deal really is. Just very basic stuff and mostly from insurance sales sites and that ain't the best source. Important to know though, is how their liability system is set up. If PR is only requiring $4000 liability coverage, that means to me that I hope a guy can purchase MedPay coverage and under-insured coverage because even a minor wreck can result in med's exceeding that very low coverage. If you don't have Medpay or underinsured coverage, and you suffer a fx wrist from the steering wheel eg, I hope your personal health insurance will cover it, It should, but some have a clause that say if there is "other insurance" the other insurance is primary yadadadadadadadadadada, especially for negligence claims andnot pure health issues--eg, I have a tumor.

Interesting and surprised there is not more on the web, even the Coast Guard and AARP sites were very basic.

adlin20

We purchase a 1999 Ford Explorer with 85k miles last year for $3500. The suv was owned by an older guy and he took good care of it. I'm not sure we'll be able to ship the same vehicle for that price. PR don't encourage you to ship your vehicle with the hacienda charges.
Just do your homework, you will be able to find good deals. Specially since a lot of locals want to leave and are selling now.

tonie064

We come from NY also and after driving it down to Fla., we tried to sell it down there but didn't . Then we came down here and left the car in my brother-in-laws hands to sell it and after sitting there for a while we had to junk it. It was a 1998 Izusu Rodeo with many, many miles on it so it was past its due to rest. We weren't planning on bringing it down anyway and after being here for 6 months we finally bought a car from our landlord who happens to sell cars. It is a 2006 Mazda 3 and it has worked out well for us. We do plan on getting another vehicle in the future, probably a SUV or pick up.

Where do you come from in NY?  We came from Long Island, lastly Selden in Suffolk County. I miss it since 3 of our grandkids are there but I don't miss the snow and cold.

Take care,

Tonie
