Sea Angel

My housekeeper was held up by knife point on her way to my house to work yesterday by the taxi driver bringing her.  Of course, she never made it here yesterday and I was wondering why because she is so good at calling.

He got her purse, money, cell phone, etc.

I suggest wearing a decoy purse and keeping money and valuables in your pocket.

Ironically, I was just told about some other knife point hold ups.

Be safe!!

And before anyone tries to blame on the ones they always blame it on, it was a local -- like in all the cases that I have heard it has been.

MoEl

How is she?

She's okay.  Just shaken.  She handed over the purse when he pulled out the knife.  He pushed her out of the car, just got dirty.  She never showed yesterday.  But she was here today.

She said this is the second time.  We told her to always take the taxi license number down and to call me when she gets in the taxi so hopefully it will be some kind of a deterrent.

Thanks for asking.  :)

I will.

I hope your housekeeper is honest with you, because I've heard cases where the maid or housekeeper make up similar stories then ask their employers for money. So you'll feel sad and sorry for her and then eventually give...

Probably does happen.  But nope she did not ask for money.  She is very trustworthy.  And she usually calls if late or cannot make it.  So I thought it strange when she did not show yesterday.

I hope she comes out of it quickly. Its really sad.

Taxi related incidents are so much on a rise! A friend of mine took a taxi to nearby store, he didn't had change so he handed over a 50 LYD bill after confirming the driver had change, but without saying a word he drove away like he was in a car chase or something.

Such a sad incident Sea Angel, I am glad your house keeper is physically OK, I wonder if this sort of thing has ever happened to a female ex-pat ?, the reason I ask is that my wife happily jumps into a taxi any time she needs one without a second thought.

Yes, it does and can.  It's best to get one reliable taxi.  But if not have her take the license plate down of every taxi she gets in.

What benefit will that do if she gets into the Taxi?

I would assume that if an 'incident' were to occur then she could report the license number to the Police. It wouldn't prevent the incident, but it might get the guy arrested afterwards, or beaten to a bloody pulp if I found him.

MoEl

^ It would prevent the incident. They'd see her reading the plate number to someone over her cell. That's enough to deter them unless they're high or drunk.

That is unlikely to happen but the danger part is... they will be what they usually are i.e. "DUMB"

You can go to authorities and track them down.

ghecko

Worrying for all of us.
Apart from being shaken, pleased to hear she is physiclly ok

yadayadayada

that is such a shame...
I haven't heard anything like that happening to lbyns.
calling someone and giving them the cab license very loudly would deter them from trying anything stupid...
another thing would be try to get a local(a local you know not one off the street) to hail the cab and tell him where to take you...

dr.ezoo

I am glad your house keeper is save .

problem in living in libya is the safety it self , this will let us keep our guard-down and get into trouble from nowhere .

i hope all expat don't show u r mony(50LYD bill YAMyy) and don't show ur expensive cell , don't let him drove u in some dark places ,and speck some libyan language it will fearful & help(they all idiot).

Julien, of all the attacks and comments that the local Bums & Losers Association have made and continue to make under numerous usernames, this was the only one that caught your attention enough to intervene?? Or are you being black mailed and bullied?

Mudman

I put it into Google Translate, but it crashed their servers.

Julien

Moel, I moderated most of what you reported. The thing is that I am currently abroad (10,000km from home) looking for sponsors

Please please please keep sending us reports it helps a lot. Once I'll be back at home I'll moderate, delete & ban

It didn't come across like that to me at all. During the past year their have been some pretty abusive posts aimed at individuals, I think Mo was just trying to put into perspective that calling taxi drivers 'idiots' is pretty tame in comparison.

Just to add to the topic, an ex-pat had his backpack stolen from him by two guys in a car on the road the BP building is on, suffering bruising as a result, keep safe folks.

uefastriker

Clans, I agree. The abuse on this forum, veiled or otherwise has become an increasing issue. I think Julien is doing his best to get a grip on it, and we can all do our bit to help, by reporting it.
Despite the circumstances of my birth and upbringing, I do consider myself a "local" of sorts, and believe the "local bums and  losers" comment was unnecessary and just one in a increasingly tiresome litany of blanket attacks on all things Libyan, by this gent. Now while there are many things about Libya and some sectors of its society, that deserve criticism, there are the positives. I apologize for going off topic. In any case, SeaAngel brings to our attention a serious issue that deserves our attention and demands that we should all remain vigilent and take the necessary steps to keep ourselves safe.

:top: Agree re the bit in bold and the safety aspect mate. I think Mo is just disappointed that his country hasn't made more of itself with the revenue it has at it's disposal. Just think mate, if the could just fix the transport infrastructure and start using duel Arabic/English signs (selfish I know) how much better a place this would be.

I can't stress enough that if you have a bag of any variety to keep it away from the passenger side of any car, not always easy, but an effective way of stopping them getting your valuables.

uefastriker

I take your point Clans. I'm probably more disappointed than most. And being a Wednesdayite, I am becoming too accustomed to being disappointed. If it was only as simple as fixing the transport infrastructure!
