Carolina Park Renovation

Carolina Park is a beautiful 165 acre park in the business district of Quito. For the past several months they’ve been renovating it and it is coming out great. Initially I thought it was a limited renovation but it’s a massive renovation project that is being implemented in three phases. The man-made lake is complete, and so is a nice blue track. They also fenced portions of the south-end, and work continues elsewhere, but it’s organized and implemented in a way that doesn’t interfere with most visitors having a good time.

Check it out, pick a spot or have a picnic on the lush green grass, enjoy the beautiful scenery within and the gorgeous mountains to the west.

Here are a couple of pics of the laguna (lagoon) after the renovation work. I don't have before pics but the difference is considerable. The first image was taken from the top of the small footbridge. The second one is the pier where you can rent paddle boats, there's also a new restaurant there which I haven't tried yet.

Interesting stuff.

There appear to be water amenities in both photos.

What are they?

The pictures are of the same body of water. The lagoon is like an oval with and island in the middle. You can get to the island by crossing a small bridge. The picture with the building and people is basically the starting point.

One other thing that I like about the “Nueva Carolina” as it’s advertised are the signs to be socially responsible with regards to dog poop. I’ll post more pics as more improvements are completed.

Here’s an update on Carolina Park. It was lovely before, an island of greenery, but it’s awesome now after the renovations. So you may ask what’s better about Carolina Park now? Well I posted about the lagoon previously which by the way you can rent a paddle boat for $4 (for  4 people) and with unlimited time.

There is also a completely new blue track that is highly illuminated and with good number of people as late as 8:00pm, but this is summer holidays so that might change after the recess. But nonetheless this wouldn’t have been possible without the infrastructure improvements including new lighting.

There are also improved roads within great lighting inside the park to take you across from east to west or Shyris to Amazonas. There are also numerous new football (soccer) fields in the north end that are great for groups of friends or families. They’re nice because they’re not as big as full size soccer pitches but enough for friends and family to enjoy a game of football without getting too tired, it's a faster game that is more enjoyable for us amateurs.

Also the food sellers have their own stationary quarters underneath canopy and overall it’s aesthetically pleasing. As a family who enjoys Carolina Park a lot we want to thank Quito’s municipality for doing a great job, and Carolina Park is indeed world class.

Additionally, I'd like to add that the construction at the north and south end of the park are two new Quito Metro Stations that are under construction. The north end station will be called Inaquito and the south end I believe Carolina, and right across the street from Mall Jardin on Republica.

Thankfully it’s back to school time and the holidays are coming to an end. Carolina, the past couple of months was like a carnival atmosphere, a sea of people from all walks of life. Vendors of all kinds throughout the park, ice cream stands, chicken wings, grilled chicken and sausage kebab kiosks, rental kites, heck they even had a bicycle repair tent.
My wife loves it. I like it too but I love the quiet Carolina more - the one where the courts and tracks and open spaces are all empty.

This is our first "summer" and back to school season and it’s pretty cool to experience this transition. Another cool thing is that on the north end of Carolina there’s a health trailer where you can weigh yourself, get your blood pressure, and BMI for free. It’s near the corner of Shyris and Unidas Naciones. It's primarily for health awareness and to educate people about health. It's a good thing, so if you don't know your BMI find out exactly what it is instead of relying on internet sources. Again cheers to Quito's municipality for having such a wonderful oasis of leisure in the middle of the city.

Will agree with all the high praises vsimple has given the park. Have no before renovation reference like vsimple does. Went there for the first time today with my two sisters, two baby nieces, brother-in-law, and his mother. It was absolutely beautiful. Was so nice seeing so many people of all different ages enjoying themselves. My sister said during the week when she goes it's not very crowded. Not sure if was just this Sunday, or Sunday's in general, but it was quite busy. Not in an inconvenient bump into people, can't do anything way. Still plenty of room to move around easily. Was really cool seeing all the people out on the paddleboats in the lagoon enjoying themselves. Thought it was a really nice place.

Nice to hear you enjoyed the park, and yeah it's like that every weekend, more so on Sundays and holidays.

If was living here full time, it would definitely be a place that I would go for my daily walk, and later would probably find a nice place by the lagoon to sit and relax for awhile. Is a very well done, thought out park. About the only negative, and this isn't a big negative, because overall is so nice, but thought that the water in some parts of the lagoon looked quite dirty.

That’s unfortunate, hopefully the maintenance department will get on it, and keep the park looking beautiful. I know it took a beating over the summer months because almost every day was like a Sunday with school out, and many employees taking their 3 week vacations over a two-month period.
