Expand your social circle in England

Post new topic

Priscilla

Hello everyone,

Moving to England means leaving one's family and friends behind. Creating a circle of friends or joining an existing one should therefore be paramount in order to fight loneliness in your host country.

But how can one develop a social network in England? Where and how to meet people there?

How easy is it to meet locals? What about cultural specificities?

Share your advice and experience!

Many thanks in advance,

Priscilla

hi, warm welcome to england.
You will meet very nice people here. First if you are here for study, you will meet people in university. And also there are many social events going on every day in the UK. There is one app which i use to meet people is "Meetup" . here you can join the groups of your interest and then go for a specified event. People normally there dont know each other and all of them are there to meet new people.

Hope you meet nice people here.
If you need anything or want me to show you around london, I will be happy to show you as i love meeting new people.

Thanks

Hi As we were helped with English home stay with  nice rooms to rent and invited to  all sorts of activities it was so great we also went to a part of the uk where they were amazing we were also offered to work with Michaela  and the team  on business ,charity, development projects  and startups and were also offered to travel around the area for sight seeing and tourist areas .
i dont think i could have met a better person and now i run the welcome department for people visiting the area ,and arrange things so there not worried at all about anything , so its a win win and he gave me a place to stay ,if anyone is planing to come to uk just drop me a hi and if you want to visit our areas and stay in a nice rooms or studios  we will do the same for you .as we have nice rooms  empty and available for new guests at various times close to all amenities and easy reach to airport and railways and major roads to the city all 10 min away ,and 20 min to the beach . so ask  a British professional  for any free advice so relax and welcome .

Though not a Brit, I dare advise: open up towards English esthetics, the language, the wit, the works. These will guide you naturally. Never force yourself to come across. I could expand on that but... no, that will suffice.

Hi Priscilla,
In my experience networks like meetup.com and couchsurfing are a great place to start. I've found English people to be friendly and welcoming, although you may find quite a few people to be a bit cold and reserved at first. The English have the pub as a unifying place for socialising. This unfortunately often includes also copious amounts of drinking, which may be odd/unpleasant/annoying if you are not used to that. But there are plenty of opportunities to meet with people outside of the pub: gym, cafes, local markets, university events...
Hope it helps.
Good luck!
