Hey all, Does anyone know how the vehicle tax rates work?   All I hear from locals is that the tax is expensive but nobody can give me any more details....  I also heard insurance was expensive and that's only 240 per year so i don't know what to believe....

I found a steal on a little suzuki convertable for 2000 euro, and I'll pick it up today/tomorrow and use it just to allow me to tour the island and do some camping, but I dont know if the tax or 50% or 5%...

Any advice would be appreciated

Hi Chad,

You will need the vehicle road book , get insurance coverage and pay road tax through insurance company ,then go to the car registration office for registration ( and VRT examination). I think you will need a Maltese ID card too ( or EU passport with residence sticker) but not sure on that.
Road tax depends on car and is not too bad.
Insurance company will probably want to see a letter from your previous car insurance company, at least mine did.
Insurance depends on car value and chosen coverage. My little Toyota Vitz costs around 600 ,- /year fully comprehensive and is paid yearly upfront.

Hope the info  helps a bit.

Vehicle Road License (aka Annual Circulation Tax) rates can be dowloaded from this site:

http://www.transport.gov.mt/Page.aspx?pageid=573&lid=1

I used it last week to check the rates my Insurance Company were giving me as they also offered to pay this fee on my behalf (how nice!) and it was accurate - the criteria are:
Engine Type: Petrol or Diesel
Engine Size or emissions (depending uopn when registered)
Age of vehicle
Mine was €150 for the year for a 5 year old (2006) Toyota Ractis

ok, just sent you both a message.  Hope you both OK.  Ive not even started looking for a car yet but love the sound of a convertible jeep!   Send me a pic once youve bought it....was it a private seller or a dealer?  Was debating whether to bring one over from the UK but not sure I can face the drive!!!
