Junking Cars with No Paperwork?

Hello!

My father spent his summers in Hungary for about 3 months and the rest of the time in California.
While he was there, he shipped 2 US registered vehicles - a 1985 Mercedes and a 1993 Toyota Camry.

He passed away suddenly in 2009 and it's been a process to handle all of the legalities surrounding his death. I have NO paperwork for these cars anywhere. NO title, NO registration, nothing. I am not sure they were even registered in Hungary because they had California plates.

Do you have any recommendations on what I can do with these cars? I would like to take them to a junk yard but I  am not sure if they will require any paperwork.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
~Erika

Presumably these cars are in Hungary now, with their original California plates.

Have they been driven since 2009?  What kind of condition are they in?

Are they just stored?

erikaq

That is correct. They are in Hungary with California plates.

They have been stored in a garage the entire time. The engines were turned on in 2013 when we went back to visit but not since then.
They are in fair condition. Minor dings, no major damage. Interior wear and tear.

So presumably you are in California (or USA) and can get replacement documents?

Sorry to hear about your father.
We also brought in 2 Cal. cars 20 years back.
Got lucky and sold one to a real "Gypsy King" and the other we kept because at that time the car was a year or so too old to register in HU.It was a nice big Audi , we also stored it and only used it when we visited HU, Had it in my MIL garage for years.
We sold the Audi without papers, we have papers on the car but the new buyer didn't need them.
We sold the car in the paper for parts.
Maybe you can put an add in the paper to piece out the cars.
If the engines are still good I am sure someone would like spare parts.
A junkyard may want to see paperwork, I know when we took in 3 old car batteries to recycle they did want to see our tax ID numbers for Hungary.
There are allot of people who are looking for parts as old parts are expensive in HU, advertize, good luck.

Another idea is to try and contact the DMV in Cal. to see if they have any info on the car. Perhap
s your dad didn't keep up his yearly registration there but they still may have some papers on the car showing at least that he is the owner. Try going online to the DMV and see if you can find any
useful info.

I doubt the OP wants to come to HU to scrap the cars.  The Toyota can probably be junked unless it's in exceptional condition or some special vehicle.  To make it all useful, all of the details need to be known about the cars.    The Mercedes is absolutely another matter.

Good morning !!

Sorry to hear about your father - I understand all the bureaucracy can feel overwhelming over here.

Have you resolved anything with these cars yet ??

I'm happy & able to help if you've not sorted anything - both cars should have some intrinsic value, which I can confirm when I see them - as long as I can get to them, I can take them for scrapping / parts breaking with no hassle to you - paperwork not necessary - if you're still not sorted, please let me know if I can help !!
