UBER has landed in Puerto Rico

Post new topic

frogrock

Just read an announcement in the Caribbean Journal. Uber has landed in Puerto Rico.

And for now it is free, but only metro area for the moment.

Gary

That's good news. More competition should lead to better service and lower prices.

ReyP

And nicer, customer oriented service

Yes, I ditched the rental and we've been using Uber since Tuesday. These guys have been great! They're excited about the new job and I'm excited to have them. So it has been fun. Of course, the taxi response to Uber appears to be quite ugly. Hopefully all will calm with time.

Does anyone have any idea how the Uber rates compare with the obnoxious taxi bandits. Not being around their sorry attitude is worth something.

Access this site for fare info. Uber sent it out earlier this week.

This is great, though cars seem mostly available near the airport.  There is a Uber reservation service in many cities on the mainland that lets you reserve an Uber in advance.  It is called UZURV.  I don't know if it is available in PR yet, but you can download the app.

The program just started and it is still on in political limbo. There are two goverment organizations figjting over which should have control. One is against the service and the other is allowing the service. There is a judge involved to make a rullibg

For now it is going to be mostly metro area, it is not just the aiport. People in Hato Rey and other metro areas are getting a ride. But yes airport is a favorite, which tick-off the taxy drivers to no end. There been several incidents with damages to UBER cars and intimidation of the drivers.

Hard to say when expansion will occur, polities are getting into it even in metro area. Then again everything is political in PR.

Good morning.  I had not heard anything about this until now...can you please give more details about Uber in Puerto Rico, specifically, when will service be available and will service be provided island-wide.

I do hope this is true as transportation is always an issue and renting a car for two-three weeks or longer plus insurance is quite costly...I know, this is what I do every time I go there.

Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

To my knowledge UBER is operating temporarily in the island in the metro only. However they are sebject to stop carrying passengers at any moment due to the above issue with the two government agencies.

No real plan for expansion outside the metro area has been discussed to my knowledge.

If you plan to use them, download their app. Here are their rates. https://newsroom.uber.com/puertorico/tarifas-san-juan/

No sure how long they will operate, the case is in court.

Hi Rey...thank you for your insight...again, I did not know of the legal issues Uber has encountered...seems as if they were barely able to "roll-out" the service before the hurdles begin.

Thank you for the information and please, continue to post as information as to the resolution of the legalities become available.

I appreciate it very much.

Minor update. The Department of public transportation DTOP issued a temporary permit for Uber to operate, however the judge has placed a temporary stoppage on the service pending a final decision, the CSP is fighting them and saying they have not meet their requirements to operate. So the judge will decide which department has juricdiction. Today the governor ruled that it should be the DTOP, but it is up to the judge to nake the final decision. These two departments are just looking fir power and the CSP aparently does not want Uber to operate.

Hi Rey...thank you once again for the important update.  It's too bad that prosperity and industry is being restricted by the out-of-date, choking laws that have possessed my island country for so, so long.

It's the main reason why Puerto Rico cannot move ahead and in many. many ways has been left behind by a very-fast moving world.

I sure pray for some positive change. I was born and lived there, in the amazingly beautiful "municipio" of Isabela...my parents brought me to the mainland US as a child. Now as an adult, and having lived here for decades...it's time for me to return.

There are so many issues right now in an island that should be very industrialized and progressive by now, that each and every step I take in my trajectory back to my native country, becomes a huge hurdle.

Please keep me updated as to the Uber issue and other issues relevant to living there and moving around the island. I drive, and rent a car every time I visit, however; I don't always need it every day so I waste valuable money. There really are no other taxi services moving around the island, and certainly, no public transportation...really, no reason for this in the 21st Century, but the blame is not Puerto Rico's.

Thank you so much...I appreciate your feedback.

Also check the public cars http://www.mydestinationpuertorico.com/ … ublic-cars phone numbers there.

Locals can tell you were to pick up the Carros Publicos, end points are around the town plazas.

Thank you Rey, for the two new links...the information is critical and useful for current and future planning.

I appreciate all the useful information I am receiving.

Thank you once again.
