Sports in Romania

Post new topic

Priscilla

Hello everyone,

The Olympic Games are now just a few days away and we would like to talk about sports.

What sports are the most popular and/or unusual in Romania?

Are sports facilities easily accessible there? Where and how can one find sports clubs in the region?

Are there sports events regularly held in the country?

And you? What is your favourite sport? Which one(s) do you practice in Romania?

Thank you in advance,

Priscilla

Sports in Romania are mostly limited to football, basketball and handball, maybe rugby also.  None of which have teams or players of any real significance outside the country.  Most Romanians are either fans of football teams Steaua Bucuresti or Dinamo Bucuresti.

Unfortunately since the fall of communism, sports have fallen off the radar and largely have lost the funding and support of the government that they once had.  Many that do receive some type of funding, are involved in corruption and mismanagement, so modern training facilities never get built and athletes can't afford to train as necessary to compete, as the higher ups pocket the money.  It's quite disappointing, considering that Romania had a long tradition and led in gymnastics in the past.  Anyone remember Nadia Comaneci? :)  Romania didn't even qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Gymnastics.

Romania often performs poorly in international competitions today.  Counties/cities are trying to reverse this trend in part by constructing sports halls/gyms where people can get involved in team sports, unfortunately they are poorly organized and ran.

Martial arts of various disciplines can be found in most larger cities and are popular, along with private gyms or sports clubs.
