Dealing with homesickness in Ethiopia

Post new topic

Priscilla

Hello everyone,

Being an expat in Ethiopia can turn out to be a wonderful human, social or professional adventure... with potential moments of nostalgia and homesickness along the way.

What are your personal tips to prevent homesickness?

How do you deal with such feelings?

Are there shops or stores offering products from your home country in Ethiopia? Or maybe venues with music and ambiance from your homeland?

Thanks for sharing your experience,

Priscilla

Home sickness will happen especially if you don't speak Ethiopian. So before you come to Ethiopia, try to learn at least some basic Amharic. Also, having sex with Ethiopians will make you feel much more connected (and probably not wanting to go "home" anymore).

In places like Addis and Gondar, you can find other foreigners. So you can make some foreign friends. Also the expat community may organize trips or parties. So when you get a house, make sure that there are other expats in your neighborhood.
