Hey there,
my name's Frederic and I'm from germany. I received a job offer from a german company residing in Gibraltar. The company has a headcount of about 200 people and I'd be a consultant to the CFO.
All this sounds fantastic, though the problem is, I have to make a quick decision....
I know some things about Gibraltar, but this does not include stuff like living costs (rent, food, drinks, clothes, insurance, income taxes etc.)
Some more information about myself:
- I'm 25 years old
- MBA with focus on finance
- This would be my first real job (despite a couple of internships in consulting)
It would be great if someone could tell me how living costs and taxes for residents are
and / or what salary I could roughly ask for :-)
Thanks in advance,
Best regards,
Fredric
PS: Would you say Gibraltar is generally a good place to spend 1 or 2 years :-) ?
Hi Frederic,
I'm a recently graduated 24 year old software engineer and I too am in the process of negotiating a job offer in Gibraltar and i'm looking for similar advice.
I've done some research too and it seems that finding affordable accomodation in Gibraltar itself is quite challenging and most people recommend finding somewhere across the border in La Linea.
The income tax is quite difficult to fathom as far as I can see. From what I have read, there is a confusing system where you have to choose between two different systems, one favours lower incomes and the other favours high incomes. I could be mistaken but this seems very chaotic if it is the case!
As for general expenses such as food and drink I have no idea.
Lets hope someone can provide some more solid answers!
Regards,
Dean
Hi!
Currently living in Lisbon, Portugal, I have an offer to work in Gibraltar with an income of 1.000.
Is it doable, in Gibraltar or in La Linea de la COncepción (middle class - this income is more than the doble of Portugal minimiun wage).
Is it easy and fast to cross the border every morning and every afternoon? is there busses or so? affordable cost?
Is it safe to live in Gibraltar or in Linea de la Concepción?
Is it necessary to register as a foreigner to work there? how can that be done?
And travelling to Madrid or London or Lisbon/Oporto/Faro is chip?
Thank you very much for your attencion.
Hi all
I would recomment thatyou read the other forum subjects for some more information on Gibraltar .
But i can tell you Springbutterfly that you will need to ring the consulate of gibraltar for guidance/approval to work there if you are foreign.
As far as the crossing from La Linea i have been told that it can take 20 minutes to cross every time.
The rent is high in Gibraltar, but you have to think about what youre getting compared to this country, most of them have a pool, the parking seems to be an additional cost. The running costs are not high.
You can get a good 2/3 bedrom flat with a shared pool for £800, i think this is very good. But if you compare to La Linea or the like then you can get a 3 bedroom house there for £500 but you will have to travel.
And remember that it is a duty free land, so food, drink, cigarettes should be cheaper. The local transport is very cheap.
Flights from Gibraltar to the Uk are cheap.
With regards to the tax system, you can choose to continue to pay your contribution direct to the uk, or pay there, it doesnt affect your NI/pension.
The tax is cheaper if you have children thats as much as i remember about that. It is all dependent on what your earnings are anyway.
I found a great deal out by reading the other forum topics and by simply typing various questions into google.
Gail
Gail, thank you very much!
I can inferred it is cheaper to live in Gibraltar than in Spain? Malaga? Marbella? Estepona?
Do they deal in euros? i've read that they deal in gibraltines pounds and that the cambio from euros is pretty bad...
Also, some people said that it can be slow to cross the boarder every day because of traffic. Do you have idea how long can that take? are there busses? (i've researched and i think that there are no busses from La linea to Gibraltar and I don't drive...).
Sorry for so many questions but everytime i think about the options i want more and more detailed information.
Maria
hi Maria
It takes 20 minutes to cross apparently if walking? Ive read about the crossing on one of the older questions here, i cant remember but it was something like a 20 minute walk or you could get a scooter (please check).
They do have the gibralta pound but it has a similar rate to the british pound.
Other members here have posted comments on cost of living so you could read that one. I always say it depends what you want out of it really. I am not bothered about the shops in gibraltar, because i would buy in either spain or the uk, because i would be flying often back and forth.
