I'm moving to Abu Dhabi in January . My employer provides accomodation for the 1st month .. but my friend is coming out however has no date. I'm wondering if short term rentals are available as we will get an apartment together when she gets out..

Yes they are available, you can go to Dubbizle.com to fine daily/weekly/monthly accomodation options. Just to remind that they are not "legal" means you wont be having any contract or anyother legal documents but still you can live peacefully as 50% population are living likewise.
