hi,

i have some general questions about mauritius.

1. is it easy to get an extended stay in mauritius?  we would like to stay 6 months a year on the island.

2. are there animal friendly rentals?

3. is there a problem with "hepatitis a" on mauritius?

4. is the tourist development tastefully done or is the island overrun?

5. are 6 month leases possible?

thank you.

Hi,

1) You can stay for 90 days on one visit. Renewable for another 90 days which makes it max of 180 days for one calendar year.

2) Yes. Depending on the terms and conditions of your rental contract.

3) No. Non-communicable diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure are more prevalent in Mauritius.

4) Depends on your location on the island. Not really overrun however Mauritius does get more tourists than its own population in a year and therefore does feel 'crowded' in some areas.

5) Negotiable terms of lease with your realty agent or landlord.

good information.

how do we go about renewing the 90 days?

is it enough to have an airline ticket to reunion?  we are not returning to the US.

ty.

You don't have to leave the island for an extension.

You have to leave the country if you have stayed for 180 days which is the max. duration of stay allowed as a tourist and are applying from scratch again.

For the extension, you have to submit the following documents to the Passport & Immigration Office:

>  Extension Application Form duly filled and signed by applicant

>  Photocopy of the data pages of applicant’s passport + Page on which Arrival Stamp has been affixed.

>  Copy of confirmed Return Ticket (Original to be produced).

>  Bank statement (proof of funds)

>  Hotel booking or

Letter from sponsor. If sponsored by a Mauritian citizen, latter to submit:-

                (a) A Letter of Sponsorship stating:

                   (i) name, address,

                   (ii) Telephone number,

(iii) profession of the sponsor and

                   (iv) relationship with the applicant.

              (b) National Identity Card,

              (c) A Utility Bill + copy (To confirm the address of the sponsor).

thank you for the information.

i want to make sure i completely understand this.

government websites say that an american can only stay for 90 days and has to apply to enter when flying to mauritius.

are you saying that the initial application can be for as long as 180 days?

and is a ticket to reunion sufficient for that part of the visa?

thank you very much.

WinstonH

Coming as a tourist, you don't need a visa to visit Mauritius. It's called an entry permit which is max. 90 days.
An extension grants you an additional 90 days max.

However, the Passport & Immigration has the final say as to how many additional days you will be granted. Applications for extension are considered on a case to case basis and the duration of the extension is granted accordingly.
3 scenarios here:  > A full 90 days extension is granted
                                 > Less than 90 days is granted
                                 > Worst case scenario...extension rejected completely

So yes, the initial application can be as long as 180 days if you are granted a full extension. No need to travel to Reunion or to a third country.
