Where to live in KL?

Post new topic

chexican

Hello, I'm an American moving to KL at the end of January with a friend. We are both journalists and will be traveling by foot, public transportation, and taxi (no personal cars). We don't have a particular place to live in mind yet, as we will be traveling around Malaysia. What is an area that is very safe, especially for those walking to and from public transportation (that can get you very far)? Also, close to grocery stores, medics, not too noisy (as in next to the highway because of cars), and close to nightlife and restaurants would be a plus too!  :) -- in addition, where rent isn't sky high.

We looked at Ampang, Bukit Bintang, Bansang - what area would you recommend the most? Thank you.

Hi Chexican,

I will recommend the most Bukit Bintang area. It is good place to stay there because easy access to public transport & many amenities (+ nightlife is happening)   :)

Condo along Jalan Ampang will be good choice for you.
Properties market is not doing good recently, probably you can find good price property now.
For public transport, I suggest you better use Uber or Grabcar/grabtaxi mobile apps rather than hire the taxi in public because many cases of taxi driver simply charge foreigner high price.

Check out regalia residency.
We have a unit there if you are keen.?
Studio apartment accessible to two train lines - 5 mins walk away.
It's currently vacant

Jalan ampang or jalan uthant near the America embassy is a great choice.. its very quiet although you are in the city. Near to all the train station and all the major shopping malls like klcc and pavillion. I do think Bukit bintang is a bit noisy and full of arabs restaurant and supermarkets. Jalan Ampang or Bangsar  is usually the expat choice

I am born and bred in KL. Used to live in the States too. Currently am a realtor in KL and my suggestion to you is that you may have to decide if convenience/a quiet neighborhood/price is a priority. These are the list of popular areas expats would seek residence:

1. Golden Triangle (Inner KL aka KLCC)
This refers to areas around KLCC, Uthant, Jln Ampang. Of course living in these areas come at a price. Living in downtown KL - your gonna have to put up with the hustle and bustle.

2. Bangsar
Public transport is non existent. Even the locals avoid taking the public bus. Its an upmarket neighborhood. Comparable to Chelsea in London. Ton of bars, fancy restaurants, neighborhood malls, cafes...you name it they've got it. Though, its pricey.

3. Mont Kiara
Public transport here too is non existent. Yes there are public buses but these too are avoided. Iinm, there are private shuttle busses provided by some developers within the Mont Kiara vicinity to the main train station - KL Sentral - where you could get on the MRT/LRT. Though, you will need to provide your condo/apartment resident pass upon boarding these free shuttles. I am not too sure of the frequency of these private shuttles - I would have to get back to you if your really looking into seeking residence within this vicinity. And Mont Kiara is possibly the most popular residential area amongst expats due to its quiet upper class neighborhood, many expats, ton of amenities, international schools etc. Many well heeled Malaysians live here too. Its similar to Bangsar except Mont Kiara is a newer suburb and possibly more family oriented.

I don't think Bangsar or Mont Kiara is suitable. Yes they are nice places to live, but since you are both journalists and it seems without children then either Bukit Bintang or near to KLCC is probably better, depending on your budget.

In KLLC there are places like Hampshire Place, Hampshire Residence and several condos in that area which are not excessively expensive. In Bukit Bintang there is Angkasa Impian 2 and a whole lot of new condos all around that area.

So unless you are looking for family life with kids, I suggest KLCC or BB.

Regalia is in the middle of nowhere although not so far away from the city.

But then, since you said you were moving to KL in January you have probably already settled in :)

Haha yeah Abdul Khalil is right. You could also consider the area of Ceylon Hill - which is just a 5 min walk to Changkat Bukit Bintang, 10 mins walk to Bukit Bintang, a 15min walk to KLCC/Jalan P Ramlee. You could also possibly rent a studio unit in Ceylon Hill starting from around RM2.7k.

How abt TTDI . Just 10 feet to LRT station.  Btw, Im a Licenced Real Estate Negotiator.
If you need my help, please le me know.

I think Bukit Bintang is the best area to stay for tourists :)

Bit of a culture shock and the pimps are a pain in the arse.
I would look at other areas.

However, if you can ignore the filthy little toads offering you a young girl and/or a young boy, the shopping is good.
