Hi All,

My husband and I have been dreaming of moving to Mauritius in a couple of years.  We are from South Africa.  My husband is a senior systems engineer and specialises in VMware.

Now....my mom and brother went over last year October for a 3 week holiday and her feedback to me was as follows:

Humidity kills you.  Even with temp at 27C the humidity is so high.
No Jobs.
Average spending a day between R300 and R400
If you need something you have to travel from one end of the island to the other side.

I am now so confused and unsure of this dream of mine :(

What are your thoughts on this?

Hi Riettenel,

Have traveled a fair bit, been here in MU for 16 years, and can guarantee that there are far worse places to be.

Humidity kills you.  Even with temp at 27C the humidity is so high.
Location ?

No Jobs.
What kind of jobs ?

Average spending a day between R300 and R400
For what ?

If you need something you have to travel from one end of the island to the other side.
Again looking for what?

Cheers,

Vasoo

Hi,

Now this is a very vague feedback

Humidity kills you.  Even with temp at 27C the humidity is so high.

Depends on your location. Then again, Mauritius has a tropical climate so you cannot escape the heat and humidity at some point.

No Jobs.

Mauritius has a selective immigration policy regarding jobs. One needs to bring in qualifications, knowledge and experience not found on the island among locals.

Average spending a day between R300 and R400

Depends on your lifestyle and consumption.

If you need something you have to travel from one end of the island to the other side.

There are good shopping options all around the island apart from some isolated spots. Then again, it depends on what you are looking for.
If one really needs to travel across the island, Mauritius is only 70km x 50km in dimension...so no big deal.

Having said all this, moving to Mauritius is no dream...like almost all other destinations worldwide. As a country, it has its advantages and constraints.
Up to the expat to accommodate and soak in.

Hi there

I'm from SA been in Mauritius for 6 months & I totally love it.

Yes it's extremely hot depends on where you stay but you have the ocean to cool down.  Jobs are what you are prepared to do. If you live on luxury food it will cost that much but roti for supper can be Rs40 & it's amazing.

So yes it depends on what you want to achieve here. The people are kind it's safe and that's what counts for me.

So wishing you all the best going forward.

Patricia
