Hello,
I'm a native arabic speaker, it's important to understand the language of your residence country. definitely  you will need it.
I'm available for language exchange.

Learning basic Arabic language is very essential as you have to communicate with Police Officer, Waiter, store keeper, Vendors, etc..
Other than that you can speak in English to well educated people.
Most Saudi Arab origins know good amount of English so there won't be a problem in communicating with them.
Here they most people prefer more to Arabic speaking people than English Speaking,Sometimes you might feel inferior as we do not know Arabic language .
Apart from Arabic and English, Knowing good amount of Hindi will be very helpful in  communicating with Indians,Pakistani,Bangladeshi,Afghani as they are the majority of people here in small jobs.

I have made all efforts to learn the basic Arabic I need in carrying out my job as I live in a city where more than 90% of the nationals hardly understand or speak English Language.

For my colleagues who work in places like Malaz and Olaya have no problem struggling to learn and speak Arabic as almost all persons encountered in their place of work Speak and understand the English Language. The reason though not far fetched- many foreigners live and work around .

You can get by with English or Urdu or Punjabi for most tasks, depending on which city you're in, however, if you need to deal with a government department you must be able to speak Arabic or bring an Arab speaker with you.

I'd strongly recommend downloading Dictbox's English Arabic dictionary. It's far more useful than Google translate and works offline.

Hi Priscilla,,,

The one, who knows more languages is more superior and successful in the Society or life... Language is added value to his/her profession... There are examples of personalities in the world, if we recall but as if now remembered late Indian Prime Minister, P.V NARSIMHA RAO & Late President, Dr. Abul Kalam......

The best way to learn language is to practice in day to day activities....Priority must be given to use new words in daily routine works....Even if you know English, the middle east is dominant by Arabic...Middle east is business hub for the western world.....

The Executives & Professionals of  Multinational companies based in Riyadh are dependent on translators to run their daily show....As they do not understand Arabic and with irritation directing to another person of his/her dept., to process the documents for cheque issuance.....Because, they didn't even tried to speak or understand

i share my experience stating that i learnt Arabic by interacting with the people during work...

It is quite difficult if you don't know how to speak Arabic. In my office, most of the Arabian people don't speak English at all. Even in Saudi restaurants... they even have the menu in Arabic.
When I was looking for the house the Aqari I met didn't know English at all... Thanks to our Bangladeshi brothers with their help it became easy to get the house.. :D

It s very easy to learn arabic and i m livivng in riyadh 90% riyadhiyns know english so it s not difficult to communicate for newcomers.i m enjoying my life here.

Shanix88

Yes I do speak Arabic. Until now I'm still learning to read and write Arabic at home. Sometimes I get lazy but it is very important to know how to converse people by their own dialect. You will find a hard time communicating with policemen and some other government offices because most of them don't speak English. I'm living in Jeddah but there's not much differences between Najdi (Riyadh) and Hijazi (Jeddah) dialect. Like in Riyadh, they say "alheen" but in Jeddah they say "daheen" which means now. If you like to learn few words, you can visit this blog.

Yah speaking Atabic is a big thing here, other wise language barrier because most of the people cannot speak or understand english .Arabic is a big advantage here for getting more .

At Ease

Good question.

I have been here for just over four months now and am hard at work learning to speak Arabic.

I regard it as very crucial to learn the local language. I feel that I owe the locals a degree of respect coming here into their country to share in the benefits and and learn their language.

Some expats, if not many, come here and make absolutely NO effort to learn the language. This, in my humble opinion, is a flagrant show of disrespect. Some are very brutal and blunt about it.

For me, it is highly unacceptable that expats live here for many years and cannot even make one sentence in Arabic.

I rest my case...

danilom001

I agree to pay at least a sign of respect to the language of the country that is hosting us.   Regrettably, this is not the case in Qatar or UAE, where Arabic is not needed for survival in urban Doha, Abu Dhabi or Dubai.  Learn all you can in life; you'd eventually need it.
