Considering moving to Italy. Is there are recent, reliable source for information about getting identity cards and qualifying for health insurance? Grazie.

I believe you have to gain employment in order to qualify for the public health system in Italy.  As soon as you're employed, you are covered.  I searched online once and saw some info, but I've forgotten where.

Apparently, it is also common for people to purchase supplemental private insurance.

you can find information on permits here: portaleimmigrazione.it/

Having a job helps, otherwise its almost impossible. As for health cards I'm not sure myself yet. I came as a student and bought health insurance, although if you are seriously ill and go to the emergency they treat you for free. But if you want to see a doctor about something particular or just a check up, you pay.
