How to make friends in New Jersey

I found it quite difficult to make close friends in New Jersey. People are kind and friendly, but they don't easily open up or show real interest in your deep thoughts. I think this is just a part of the American culture. Hey, in the country so politically polarized people do not even argue about politics! (Except when on TV.)

Of course, there is always a bar scene... but not everyone likes it. So one pretty much settles for co-workers/classmates.

Mind you, I am not blaming America - I am only saying that I did not fit in.

They organize plenty of events and it helps meeting new pals (happy hours, laser tags, hikes...)
They also have a website for senior professional.

But I confirm what said vpuller, after more than 8 months in NJ I didn't make any friends. I just know a lot of people...

I have lived here my whole life and it can be difficult to meet friends, unless you have a specific hobby or enjoy the bar scene.  Many people are friends with people they went to school with still or that they go to church with.  VPuller you are correct about the politics thing, because we have such different beliefs about politics, many people choose not to discuss politics because they don't want to get into arguments.  I have friends that I can not stand their political view, so it is best we don't even bring it up.

I agree that it is hard to make friends here.

Most people are initially very friendly and smiley but it doesn't go any deeper than that. I have lived here nearly two years and if I was happy to only socialise with ex-pats I would probably be ok, but I would really like to immerse myself in the American culture and make friends with the locals.

When we first came over I was adamant that I would not stick to British friends but despite my best efforts I have failed to understand how American friendship works. A lot of people were born and brought up here and come across as very insular, preferring to stick to their own type and their own family. It can make it very lonely for incomers.

I have been 4 months in New Jersey. Try to eat that common Taco bell cuisine here or know six flags. Learning the common culture of Football doesn't work.

I just can't get why to have a contact or hangout with new jersey people or people in new jersey is so hard.

I make friends in other states from weightlifting, basketball, table tennis, clubbing, tennis, cue sports, mountain climbing, jogging, badminton, card boarding, language exchanging, chatting, guitar jamming from folks to jazz or country and different genre, and just can't get any reasons of why.

I like to make friends with whites who I think is the most easygoing people in the world and it can not get connected in NJ.

I agree. Making friends is tough, especially when you are looking for a meaningful connection. I tend to agree with @vpuller when he mentioned some of the reasons why it has been tough to fit in here.

In my experience, it has helped to find discussion groups of interest on Meetup. However, I can't say that I have made meaningful friendships to date. I have taken time to work on myself and get clearer about what path I want going forward. I have faith that doing so will make me stronger and attract people who belong in my inner circle and me in theirs.

I am really looking for good friendship. I live in New Jersey and my dream is to form a nice family friends to enjoy spending time with each other as a family.
