Naturalisation and citizenship in Namibia

Hello everyone,

What are the requirements for acquiring citizenship in Namibia? For example, length of residence, language requirements, employment etc..

What formalities are involved in the process?

What is the policy on dual-citizenship in Namibia? Do you have to give up your former nationality?

What are the advantages and benefits of acquiring Namibian citizenship, in your opinion?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Getting citizenship is very difficult nowadays. Will take you for ever even after a decade of legal permanent residence. Maybe if you are married to a well connected person or invest heavily you can get it. Being a superstar helps: Angelina Jolie and  Brad Pitt got citizenship for their kid in no time.

Sorry to say this but Namibia doesn't have a clearly defined immigration policy, it's muddled and corrupt. The staff at the immigration office will give you conflicting statements about procedures, and your application will gather dust or get lost if you don't follow up.

Getting citizenship is very tough. Even if you have been in the country on a valid work permit for at least 10 years, it will take you another 10 or so years to get word on your permanent residence application. It's practically a waste of time.

As far as I am concerned there are no benefits to acquiring Namibian citizenship. The country doesn't make it easy for people who want to get settled legally.
