hello everybody,

have been thinking about libyan unrest situation and the sanction and embargo imposed on libya, now the question is why so quick to sanction libya while other countries are still going through so much violent, and yet no sanction was impose on them.

ivory coast is in the middle of civil war but nothing is done to the government, bahrin and yemen has been in chaos, long before libya and yet no sanctions on them, is there anything personal against libya

AAAfrica

Ivory Coast is firstly not in the middle of a civil war & has had a lot of sanctions imposed.  They cannot export their cocoa, the EU won't accept it.  The IMF have pulled out, the W.African Central Bank have closed in CI ... the list goes on.

I believe that Yemen & Bahrain etc haven't been so ruthless in comparison with Libya although there has been bloodshed ...

TexasEX

It is personal against Gadhafi, who is killing his own people.

but what ever the case i think Libyans should have a plan for a strong leader believe me if that current leader no matter how bad or good he is but holding his country together if he goes the entire country can be distributed among different leaders and no doubt can end up in small territories...and  i hope and pray it should never happen whatever is the best for libyan people should happen...we had a lovely time there and would love to go back and resume our lives there.

I am wanting to go to Tripoli too.... hope the chaos will be over as soon as possible

Here's the deal about sanctions... you have to make concessions (payoffs) to get out of them.  It seems many are seeing their Cash Cow (or potential cash cow) dry up.  Let's see, how can we coax her to give more milk? Ah.... sanctions!

hamimrah

now i also strongly believe there must be something personal about the leader that the entire world without even knowing the depths of situation places all sorts of sanctions ... which is really bad.... please God help us all to get back to our routines ... and hope for the best for libyan people and their country

mintoo

have any sanctions ever worked their magic?? At the end of day the misery of the people gets compunded especially that of common people whilst the rich acquire both fame & name. This batlle is of hearts & minds and the western world should not loose sight of this by alienating the Libyan populace by throtteling both their physical & intellectual aspirations.:|

Well Said Mintoo!:)

I had a wonderful time there & hope for a good ending for all the libyans. No bloodshed & peaceful ending is what everybody is wishing. I have many libyan friends & would like to see them alive & happy.
All the Best

mintoo, on the one hand i agree with you, but the financial sanctions are to preserve the funds of libyans for libya and not let them be diverted to other bank accounts as has clearly been attempted. the outrage of the austrian hedge fund manager was but one that came to light, most of this is out of the view of the public.

the arrested cargo ship with libyan foreign currency was another. many countries print their money at larue in the UK and gaddafi had a big shipment coming in which was taken into custody by british officials. this will not be sanctions as we have seen them in the past, these sanctions will be relatively short but essential to protect the best interests of the libyan economy and therefore the well being of its citizens.

praying for friends in libya and monitoring twitter like there's no tomorrow. UN and NATO need to quit sitting on their hands.
