relocating from CA to PR questions

Post new topic

Jyee

Good evening

I am in planning phase of relocating from CA to our home in Anasco PR.

first question
we have a dog  that we adopted a few years ago and is registered as mixed breed however she resembles a pitbull sometimes so will they allow her in

also

financially im coming to PR with about 3500 per month for income is that enough to keep our family of 3 a float until i start contracting for electrical work

Mostly it is going to go based on the veterinary papers. If it says pit bull they wont let it in. If it looks like pit bull you may have problems, check with the airline.

Most Puerto Ricans scrap by with under 2k for a family of 3. Private schools is going to affect your budget. It all depends how you live and how much you pay for a place to live which is ussualy one of the biggest bills. Luckily you can rent a 3 bedroom house away from metro areas in the range of 600-900.
Make a budget we can help you with the numbers, several people have posted budgets in the forum. Electricity is expensive, check your current bill in the states for how many kilowatt hours you use during hot summer months, then double that bill for a good aproximation. Expect to pay more for milk also. Most other things are about the same.

thank you ! her papers say mixed breed, i already have a home in Anasco and our mortgage is 400 a month.  Im also an Electrical contractor with a contractors license and electrical license from California, so im looking build a small electrical service for extra money on the west side of the island. we have tuition set aside for our son in Private school

Sounds like you will be fine then, you seem to have been planing your future and setting money aside for your children.

If you already own a place and your children education is covered, then likely your 3500 will go a long way and will be able to live better than 60% of the population with that amount.

You will be more than fine on that budget. Check out my post on the cost of living, like Ray mentioned, most people live with a lot less. We live in SG and our budget is less than that and we live ok.

Be aware, jobs are hard to come here and the pay is not much. With your skills you may be able to set up as a contractor.

Welcome back to the island!!

Jyee, your chances of making money in PR are slim to none, so don't include that in your budget calculations.

And because you'll be bleeding money while not earning, you're killing your financial health when it comes to retirement. Just think how much money you could make passively if you took your son's PR private school tuition and invested it in a mutual fund instead?

I know how you feel. When I was in the Army in Panama and thereabouts, I loved the adventure. When I got out, I didn't want it to end. I've had wanderlust my whole life. But if you want the good life when you retire, don't move to a place where you're not making money.
