Only a couple of the Embassies are issuing at the moment, not sure why all of them arn't? Anyway, thought you all needed to be informed of the latest update, we fly back to Riyadh on the 11th, so will be interesting to fly into this
Be careful out there people, whilst this could all be a 'sandstorm in a coffee cup', it is a volatile situation and in this environment things have a habit of spontaneously combusting; so be warned.
Country: Saudi Arabia
Academics and leading Islamists call for reforms Calls to demonstrate 11
and 20 March
27 February, 132 Saudi academics issued calls on the internet for the
establishment of a constitutional monarchy in the Saudi kingdom, along with
political and social reforms, including the separation of powers, the
adoption of a constitution and the end of all religious, tribal, regional
or racial discrimination.
They are also in favour of women having the right to work, education,
ownership and participation in public life.
In addition, 26 leading Islamists, including preacher Salman al-Auda,
signed a petition released 28 February, highlighting the need for radical
reforms in the Saudi kingdom and warning of chaos and bloodshed unless the
demands of reform, development and freedom are met. The political reforms
demanded in the petition include the allocation of real legislative powers
and control to the legislative council, the Majlis al-Shura, the election
of all of its members and the creation of the prime ministers position,
occupied by the king until now.
Finally, the petition calls for the release of prisoners of opinion, the
freedom of expression and a firm fight against corruption.
The two petitions have been published on social networks on the internet
for several days, relaying calls for the organisation of a day of anger
11 March and a Saudi revolution 20 March. Given the uprisings in Arab
countries, the Saudi monarchy recently allocated a package of an additional
10.7 billion dollars (7.7 billion Euros) for the education and social
protection industries.
In our staff meeting we were advise to stay near our compounds on the 11th and 20th but there didn't seem to be too much importance attached to it.
The general consensus seems to be that if trouble hits it will be very minor and over very quickly. I hope I'm right!
I dont think its going to be as big as its publicized to be.
probably will be a few lads who are overexcited of the idea will show up.
just like last time 7 years ago.. just saying.
Salman
They have a facebook page 'day of rage' and did have some demonstrations in Al-Hufu in the east yesterday after prayers.
certainly not good. A foolish mock excercise by an insignificant group. Very hopefully it ll be considerably brief. so nothing to worry about, and stick to ur plans
All protests r banned in KSA.

There was demonstration held at AlRajhi mosque after the Friday prayers , there were only probably 15 of them and the police snatched their boards from them
oh my this is not good.. hope it will not like what happen in libya. i have son who is 3 months only. let there be peace here in middle east and the whole world. keep us safe here.
Its not gonna work....and we will in peace but yeah we can always be careful for our safety
As far as I see it, the only way the Saudis will riot is if they get someone else to do it for them

nice one!
Well folks, have been monitoring this and following some of the intelligence on the situation. We are NOT changing our travel plans and will be continuing with business as usual. There may be a few attempts of protesting, but things will get squashed pretty quickly so..... Makes sense to stay in if you don't have to go out on the protest days (just in case) and for western women to cover up when out so you don't open yourself up for targetted anger - usual rules apply. Be safe out there and don't get too complacent x

excellent!
I have decided to become part of the protest, but my sign will say "Women Demand to Drive!!"
I have had a terrible week with drivers! Can't wait to tell you all about it GWTFUK! So i hope you haven't postponed your trip because of this so called "Day of rage"? Nothing will happen.. There are already people in prison for provoking it. So i am not really worrying about it

Oh dear, sorry, cannot disagree with you but eh, their loss is our gain - welcome Mudman
@Madman: think not like that, since things are not going to be like libya..
Cheers!

Wishing you the best Mudman, don't worry thought the majority in Saudia are with the government and they oppose mass demonstrations.
Feeling sorry for your losses but happy to knw you wud be joining us here.
any update on this? I heard that some companies are processing exit visas and getting ready employee's passports and documents and looking up tickets in case something bad happens. It is 2 days before the main event...
We have simply been advised try not to go out unless really necessary on Friday between 1pm-5pm. Try not to worry at the moment. Its just case of having to wait and see but be prepared if possible.

Could be...nice analogy MM...
I just got off a design meeting with an Irish and British guy, and they seem not alarmed by it so it seems fine. I reckon that if these guys pushed the panic button then I think I would too...lol
All - this was just sent by a reliable source ...
Dear Valued Client,
In order to mitigate against any potential threat in the Kingdom over the coming days, XXX is addressing the safety of our team as our first concern. We have advised our employees to abide with the Government's regulations and remain home over the next couple of days.
A curfew will take effect on Friday whereby no persons will be allowed to leave their properties, and any persons found on the street will be arrested. In addition, we have been advised that the Internet will go down and will remain unavailable until next week.
Our clients are and always will be our priority, and we remain dedicated to ensuring you receive a quality service from us. At this point in time, we do not anticipate major disruptions in our continued commitment to first class service delivery across all our clients and projects within Saudi Arabia. We will closely monitor the situation over the next few days and will make sure that you are informed of the next steps.
Be safe, I don't want to hear anyone was arrested... Or shot as MM mentioned earlier!
There is no need to be worried. This a non-democratic country; so there is zero tolerance on acts like these.. They are gonna let them get it out of their system for an hour at the most..
Take it from me, don't cancel your friday plans
Nina
Don't you be going out that door on Friday... We don't need you in the slammer! Just stay home, watch movies and have some popcorn!
What is being said on the news in country? Anything?
I love how you guys are playing with your imaginations. and I can't wait to see how this thingy ends up.
I dont think there is any curfew, the Government tries its best to ignore such things exist in the first place, and make sure no body knows it did even if it did. lol.
hence stay away from crowded places, avoid carrying large cardboards with stuff written on it. and you will be ok. oh, and please dont forget to keep your mobile close and make a call asap if you think your in trouble. cuase the moment you are, its too late to call. *scary huh?*
wish you all a very safe weekend.
Salman
Salman
You could be quite right, since there is no info on the news in country... But the key is to be aware of whats circulating and be safe.
What happens this weekend will certainly set a precedent for things to come...
News about protests happening in Ukraine....
Ukraine protest
Well, we are on a plane heading in your general direction to the Land of Sand and Camels on Friday, come what may . It is impossible to put ones life on hold based on a lot of speculation. We have been closely monitoring the situation from the UK and followed various trails on activities in the area but we have not received any strong evidence to support us postponing our return on Friday (yet). However, those who know me know I always have a plan B and if the alert from CAF bears true, we will have enough stuff to keep up entertained at King Khalid International Airport's nearest hotel for a day or so if needs be . Be wise and be cautious, keep your wits about you and above all, do not venture out unless it is an emergency! be careful out there peeps.
