I don't want to appear being a mooch but I'm on disability SSD, and I get SNAP in the mainland usa, moving to puerto rico, is it possible for me to receive food assistance NAP in PR? I ask because I receive less than 850.00 dollars a month so the assistance would really be appreciated. please, no nasty feedback, I've heard enough of that living in the usa.
I am not an expert on this.
Here is the link about SNAP: https://www.benefits.gov/benefits/benefit-details/363
I am not sure what they count as income so you may or may not qualify.
Here is a little more: https://www.benefits.gov/benefits/brows … /state/208
ONE WARNING: SSI - Supplemental Security Income is not available in Puerto Rico. Not sure if you currently receive it.
You may also may qualify for MiSalud which is pretty much the equivalent of Medicaid.
If you were military make sure you have your DD-214 handy, since there are programs that lower cost for many things if you are a veteran, it is not much but every dollar helps.
If you are disabled and were accepted by the VA, you probably can look into the VA in PR.
I just claimed my Social Security which should start in a few months but not disabled so I have little info in that area. You should make a call to Social Security and see if you will be affected by the SSI issue or not.
The income you listed is very low, but if you are careful and making it in the states, you should be able to make it in PR since rent is lower and careful shopping should stretch your SNAP dollars.
You will definitely need a car in PR so be prepared to buy an old car in good shape. There are many 20 year old cars on the road in PR.
Hope this help I will try to answer your questions and hopefully in a few days some of the others on SSD may add more to it. But make a call to Social Security and double check everything.

Also go over this, there may be benefits you have not signed up for: https://www.benefits.gov/benefits/benef … p;qc=cat_1
Thank you @Rey, I'm on SSD. I already talked with social security back in May and im geting all my benefits. When i called my food assistance program. SNAP. They dont know how PR operates. I assume I'll qualify for assistance. If i had more income i wouldnt move to PR and ask for assistance at all. Thanks for the links I'll check them out. God bless you again brother.
There is also section 8 in PR, but not sure about qualifications or wait times for a place.
You're awesome man. Talk with you again soon
I am here to advise as my title states.
Hope all works out for you.
The thing is that the cost of living in PR is higher than most places on the mainland and to my knowledge, there is no corresponding increase in public assistance to compensate for this increased cost. Are you sure you've chosen the best place to relocate to?
Also, I imagine it will take a considerable amount of time to jump through all of the hoops to get public assistance (yes, I know gov't is like this on the mainland but in PR it's much worse). How are you going to fill that gap? What if they don't even approve you?
Do you speak Spanish?
To qualify for the PR Nutrition Assistance program (SNAP not available) your household income PER YEAR must not exceed $2,851 (household of 1) or $3,845 (household of 2)? Whoa.
Depends on what is considered as income. If it is only from work, then if you dont work you qualify since your income is zero. If they cound disability and or social security payments and or chapter 8 then most people would not qualify.
Yes im a mainland usa American. I calculated my monthly expensives and withoiut the PR nap program i can spend 100 for food. I get 833.00 dollars a month on SSD. It will be tight but i want a different life than this usa mainland!! Enough already. Im a single man so i will find a way lol.
Thank you so much and blessings to you and your family

Take the sample budget and make changes to it based on your particular situation. You could get an inexpensive rental place depending on where you choose to live or you may qualify for section 8 which would eliminate most of the rental cost. There are inexpensive phone plans like $29 that have limitations but may fit you better while saving you money. Rivers and beaches and forests are free so entertainment can be a very low amount a month. Careful with electricity it can blow anybodies budget.
good advice @Rey, I'm not expecting to live like a king, just a normal low budget one. hey at least I have a semi decent car lol
I rent a cottage near my farm for $200 a month. It was pretty much a shack but it has Caribbean view and sits on 40 acres of forest with access to a river and waterfalls. There is fruit growing and lots of flowers. I am renovating it at my expense and using it for getaways while i prepare to build cottages on my farm. This happens to be in the countryside. Some of the interior towns probably have cheap places. If you get to know the local farmers you can get a lot of produce really cheap like plantains, bananas, Name, mangoes in season, etc. Country people are really generous once they know you to be a good person. I have a really good rapport with my neighbors. Folks talk. If you treat one person respectfully everyone will know and before you know it you have their respect. I went for a country ride way off the main road and I came back with a trunk full of plantains, bananas and name. Half I gave half away to others and so the cycle goes. This is one way you can live cheaply if you want a rural life,
Thank you @Mrkpytn, that sounds really cool, I'm looking for a cheap house in either Rincon or Anasco, I'm thinking something like 350 a month for a completely non furnished house. I'll buy a refrigerator/ microwave / bed etc 100 for electricity/ 50 for cheap WIFI internet / 50 for car insurance / 40 for cell phone / 75 for gasoline CAR/ 30 for water bill And hopefully get on the NAP food program . My overall financial situation won't be nearly as well in the usa but the peace of mind and good people of PR will more than compensate for the CASH! LOL
By default, if you do not buy a private car insurance, when you get the car registered, you are charged around 135 dollars a year for a liability insurance. It covers around 4k of damage to others. You can save by going that route.
I've met a few folks that had SNAP in the US, but when they got here, they qualified, but received a bit less, than stateside. I'd go with
Mrkpytn's suggestion.
Thanks @Mac0067. Thats sounds right to me too. I appreciate any assistance from Puerto rico for the NAP. Program.
No fault insurance is a flat $168 annually for any driver. Marbete. It only covers the car/driver who was not the cause.
Yes i will have to get full coverage insurance for my car, i really dont have much in my life and if my car got stolen i will have nothing.
