What to expect when moving to Puerto Rico

Post new topic

Priscilla

Hello everyone,

Is there anything you wish you had known before moving to Puerto Rico? For example, transportation, internet speeds, types of housing, aspects of the culture or social life.

In your opinion, what's the most important thing to know about Puerto Rico?

When would you recommend someone should begin planning their move to Puerto Rico?

What were the most helpful ways you found to get organised? For example, did you use a checklist, were there any particularly useful websites or apps?

What advice would you give to future expats preparing to move to Puerto Rico?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

HI Priscilla,

I've lived here full time now for the past 3 years and prior to the move visited at least a few times a year over an 8 year span...  I came here with a very open mind and was set and prepared for "island time" way of life and some of the other cultural differences between living here vs Denver, CO ( where I moved from), but if there was something I wish I would have known a bit more about  prior to moving .. I would have to say it would be the driving style...that took a minute to get use to but now I find it hard to transition whenever I do visit friends back in the states as I have to say I drive more like a local here now haha..   The most important thing I think you need to know is to remember that although there are many similarities between PR and mainland USA, PR has its own style and way of life. I think for the first year I wasted a lot of time and energy wanting explanations on things that didn't make since in my mind...when in reality they made ( and still make) perfect since to the locals here.  I think its important to have a tremendous amount of patience while living here as well.  You will find that if you are open to change, are very patient  and have a since of humility that it is easy to adapt to everyday life here and you will be able to fully value and appreciate all of the wonderful things PR has to offer.   If you are planning a move here, I think it is wish to visit often before moving, find a place here that "feels like home"to you and then make that the spot you visit often and get to know some of the locals in the area  as they will become one of your biggest assets in your adjustment period.  I wish you much success in in your future  transition to PR!!
