I walk every where if I can. Some of the more walker friendly cities I have been in are here in Campeche where I live, Merida for the most part , Cancun, Guadalajara in many areas, Morelia on the main street, then not so much, crossing the street is very risk in some areas. Mazatlan, Chetumal. Villahermosa, Veracruz.  My criteria is safe, fairly easy, and hopefully attractive. None of the sidewalks are in perfect condition any where, but you can have a lovely walk down town, or on the Malacon here, and Cancun has gone to a lot of trouble to provide well maintained scenic walk ways.

Not so good areas I have found Tullum, Pueblo.   Tullim has very limited walking areas in fair to poor condition.  Pueblo has pollution and crowd issues, plus it is a complex area where the walkways are just so-so and stores you might want are not very obvious. Some places like Hermosillo look okay, but I didn't walk on those streets much due to safety concerns in that area. Playa del Carmen was okay but not pleasant to walk in. I found myself having to walk in the street often there and the beach area was disappointing. I know they have markets because  I drove by them, but from where I was staying I wouldn't have wanted to try to walk and find them. I would probably use Uber there. I'm sure it could get expensive.

I have been in a lot of cities and walk them if I feel they are safe.

Thank you do you have any info on condesa as far as convenience to shopping

I understand Condesa has had some safety problems recently, but then Mexico city is not known for it's safety.  I don't go there , but I have been to Mexico city in the past.  As I posted in the past, too many problems for me.
Condesa is sort of a boutique area designed to attract tourists. It appears charming, and it is probably easy walking, but not so safe. Yet you are already in Mexico city so you could easily explore this area and see what you think.

Thank you so much.

I live in Ajijic and don't have a car . Walk to plaza, malecon,. I have a butcher, a deli, seamstress , doctors, pharmaceutical, dozens of restaurants and several small grocery and dollar stores within blocks.Keep in mind if you need to drive taxis are very inexpensive. I also found Guadalajara and parts of Puerta Vallarta very walker friendly.

Where in Ajijic do you recommend living?

Mel01

Just about anywhere is walkable , several very different communities, for that answer I think you need to come and visit Mexico . Lots of walkable places in Mexico. Where do you want to live? Small town like ajijic, city center like Guadalajara or PV? Mountains, ocean? Walkable is just part of the question. Have fun.

I agree 100%, I have lived all over Mexico in these five years and have walked in every city. I feel the people you meet on the street are the heart and soul of that city. I lived in Escarcega, Compeche for four months, and freely, without any fear, walked everywhere. Now live in Merida, Yucatan--been here since Dec 2013--and I walk every day! I am an ex cop, and have never felt so secure as I do in Mexico.

Some great answers, but I think we drifted away from part of the question. The original question was."Can someone tell me besides mexico city are there other cities in mexico where one can walk to the grocery, market and stores, since I do not drive?"

There are lots of places to walk, but not everywhere has convenient, or easy walking to stores and Markets. It asks can they comfortably , safely get along without a car. Walking for fun is not quite the same as can I get along without a car.

Where I live yes you can if you are comfortable walking over a half mile in many areas. That may not be a problem with basic shopping, but a bag full of groceries changes that. I am 2 block from Walmart, and there are other parts of town one could live in and be pretty close to a market.

Thanks everyone for your great answers arriving in mexico in a few months I will check it out.
