APEC conference

Post new topic

Just curious but I was wondering if anyone has any reflections on the impact of the APEC conference on Da Nang.    The conference was held in Honolulu in 2011 (I went to VN in 2012) and the general public opinion of the impact was negative.  Problems were full traffic stoppages for motorcades including shutting off of pedestrian traffic, and shutting down of popular restaurants for VIP's.  Some local economists and politicians actually speculated that APEC was net bad for tourism because of tourists  who when polled said they would not come back.  I am guessing that the separation of the 5-star hotels south of town may be helping in Da Nang, but what's the story?

edit for moderators:  I am not soliciting comments on whatever a certain president says while in VN. but about the impact of the conference as a whole.

Totally ignoring anything orange, all these high powered things bring world attention to the host country but are a pain in the bum for locals.
Even a single mobile traffic jam for a super VIP messes up a city so a whole bunch of politicians is a disaster for the locals.
Politics is never about the people (Ironic when you consider the etymology of the word), but more often about cash and power for corrupt politicians.

Good idea. Love him or hate him, his name brings out very strong opinions so avoiding the subject would be a ideal. :)

Well as we didn't see a raft of comments on the inconvenience, I guess it wasn't that bad.  From the TV clips that I saw it looks like the participants may have been on the Son Tra penninsula  and maybe didn't venture into town too much.

By the way what was with the blue shirt jackets with long sleeves and no cuffs given to the leaders?  I thought maybe they were supposed to be an update on VC pajamas with a collar, but my wife didn't think so.  Anyway to be truly VC they would need the houndstooth check scarfs.  My wife said that the last time APEC was in Hanoi in 2006, they gave them actual áo dài both male and female.   I found this photo which may explain why they didn't do that again   :huh:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/APEC_Viet … 006-11.jpg

Apparently it was quite a hassle for those staying at Bach Dang / Tran Phu street. They had a tendency to close the roads from 5-7pm. A bunch of motorbikes was stuck between Indochina Tower and the shops for a good 40 minutes as both Bach Dang and Tran Phu was closed off.

Some of the delegates was staying at Novotel - alot of the other ministers entourage was staying around in Da Nanang city. The rest of the head of states stayed at Son Tra side and Grand Mercure.

How we know? We were supporting them with cars and drivers.
