Well, In my school there was different punishment system
Basically each teacher has a long hard wooden stick including the principle, they ask us to open our hand then using their full strength hitting us with the stick it's so painful specially when the weather is cold or when the hit strike the tip of fingers or when they ask us to open our hands in backward. Some time teacher use this stick on all over your body if was bad student such as engaging in fight with other student.
I got many slaps of this wooden stick on my hands for being late, missing homework or skipping classes.
It's so painful that your hands will turn blue and you can't even hold the pen to write
Glad I didnt go to your school Pretty sure if they tried that in UK again the idiots would turn round take the stick and beat the teacher with it

Never happened in my school even with the most bad student, some how all the students obey the teachers and open their hands to receive the strikes. Nonetheless would love to see the teachers beaten

it was scary. it was like a normal earthquake, but then it didnt stop. It was almost 2 minutes IIRC with another 6.0 right after where i was. It was crazy seeing everything sway and shake, then the news coverage after that with the tsunami, and power plant problems. i left japan a few months after that
