I will be travelling extensively along the route on the map at the link provided.
Is there one cell carrier that covers all of the countries it passes through?
I'm assuming that with my unlocked Samsung  J7, all I need to do is buy a chip/SIM and a prepaid amount of air time for Europe and the US.

Please let me know your recommendations.

Hey there gudgrief :)

This is actually a good question and I thank you for that

Each country has their own mobile carrier company, But if you move from one country to the next they (original) use a partner cell phone provider.  It really doesn't matter which provider you choose. You will need a way to pay online for Top Ups, like a Credit Card. Now If you want to call the US, I would go for using apps like Whatsapp and finding a hotspot to use the internet free. If you want to call, I would opt for a calling card, get them from most newsagents/tabacs.

Good to see that you are visiting Vienna and passing through Austria need any questions ask away.

Are you saying there is no one company that is better (greater coverage or more countries) than any other?

Sure, I have a Skype in number which I can use to call and receive from any number in the US or Canada but not Mexico.  The problem is with receiving calls.  Ever since Microsoft bought it, it doesn't ring on my Android phone and certainly not while I'm on a bus, say, in the middle of Slovakia..  I can buy international roaming from my current cell provider by but am concerned about the price AND coverage.  Wouldn't, I was thinking that, a SIM from a European company and a month's worth of their broadest package might work better?  But you appear to be saying no one offers coverage for everything west of the Urals.  Is that correct?

The top 3 providers in EU are Vodafone, Orange and T-Mobile

Take a look at their coverage maps and compare prices.

Orange & T-Mobile no longer exist in the UK, the 2 companies merged to form EE.

Also Orange no longer operates in Austria, Drei (3 Mobile) merged with them but kept the brand name Drei.

I missed this point earlier.

Am I wrong in believing that Whatsapp does not connect to landlines?  I already have a Skype account which does that.  On a bus in the middle of Bulgaria or Slovakia, will I even be able to get Internet from the cell company?

Thanks for the offer.

Where are the best place to get sacher torte, apple strudel and schnitzel?

Any suggestions for activities or places to go that only an insider knows would be appreciated.
