Hello,

I am vegetarian for over 28 years, I cook what I eat and eat what I cook.  I would like to know what would be the market/supermarket costs for common food items such as:

Hi there fellow vegetarian friend :D

First of all let me tell you that being veggie in Morocco is close to impossible and will most certainly give you a few headaches...
I've been living here for 6 months now and unfortunately I had to eat meat on a few occasions, mostly out of politeness for people who cooked and whom I ate with.
Many Moroccan dishes are meat-based only. It can be challenging to find a proper vegetarian dish on a restaurant menu...
Also you should know that here, fish and chicken are considered "vegetarian options"... If you eat out, make sure you're extra clear about what you don't want to eat, otherwise you'll end up with a "veggie-chicken sandwich"...
And yes, this is all based on personal experience ;)

Now, regarding prices, I suggest you get all your vegetables from a local souk. Choose a guy who sells almost everything you need and come back every week, he will be honest with you if you become a regular customer. Vegetables are cheap enough here, you'll get everything you need for an average of 4 to 12 dhs/kilo.

And just for you, straight out of today's shopping receipt, here are some prices :

garlic 40 dhs/kilo (souk price)
olives 20 dhs/kilo (souk price)
quinoa 80 dhs/kilo (supermarket price)
ginger root 7 dhs (supermarket price)
butter 20 dhs (supermarket price)
oat milk 30 dhs/liter (supermarket price)

However don't even dream about finding stuff like alfalfa, barley, buckwheat, goji berries, seeds flax, soy beans, maple syrup here...

Hope this helps a bit :)

Thank you :)
