Short term job, advice on finding ayi / nanny

Post new topic

Hi Community,

I have been offered a short-term work assignment in Shanghai for 9 weeks.  I am a single-mother coming from the U.S.A.  My employer would prefer I leave my 2-year-old child behind with relatives in the US, but I don't feel comfortable with this.  Is it possible to find a short-term nanny while in Shanghai?  I need someone who speaks English and Mandarin, and preferably with nanny-experience abroad.  I will be working 12 hours a day and maybe some weekends.  I will pay over time, of course.  I am even open to hiring two people if I can't find a reliable person who would do all these hours.   I would be hiring someone about 60 hours a week for 8 to 9 weeks. It is possible this could be extended a week or 2.

Is it safe to leave my child with a nanny and work full-time?  In the USA it is and very common to do so.  I have heard many women in Shanghai stay at home with the nannies while their husbands work, but this is not my situation.

Should I go with an agency? If so, does anyone know of a good, trustworthy one?

Any advice is appreciated as this is all new to me.

Thanks!
Rory

Anything is possible. You can ask the people at your company to help you find a nanny.  They are everywhere.  They are called "aiye" (Aunties).

They will probably NOT speak English.

They will NOT understand why you pamper your child so, and will treat them Chinese style.  That might be too harsh for your sensibilities. (I won't get into it too deeply, but walking around with a hole in the pants is considered normal.  So is shitting on the sidewalk, and expecting the child to eat fish with bones and knowing how not to swallow the bones.)

You are only going to be here for a little over two months, and you want to bring your two year old? Really...?

Never been to China before, I take it.

OK.  Here is my advice. Unless you are willing to increase your stress level by a factor of 1000x by having your child in the hands of an Aiyi, I would strongly STRONGLY advise you leave your child at home. DO NOT TAKE THEM TO CHINA. This is China, keep that in mind. It is different.

yes, safety is probably main question for your situation, unless you have friends here.

maybe one possible solution is to find a local full time mother who can speak English and also could take care of your child for 9 weeks.

hope help.

Hi Rike,
If I am going through an agency and hire a nanny who speaks both English and Mandarin.  And has worked for foreign families or abroad, is safety still an issue?  I will check references.  Have you had direct experiences with nannies like this yourself?  I am willing to pay extra.  And yes, I have traveled in China and lived in Asia before.  This was not a problem with nannies in Taiwan and Singapore.  Just trying to get a better picture of the situation here.  And I will have a nanny camera in the apartment.  Leaving a young child behind is not an option for me.  Thanks for any thoughts you have.  Much appreciated.

hi Rory,
should be much safer to sign contact with a agency, maybe signing ayi / nanny
with over 5 years shanghai severing experience  is better.
     for your suggestion, hope help.
