Hello all,

Went through the forum but couldn't find the answer I'm looking for.

I will be moving to Vietnam soon and will be working remotely as a freelancer for a UK company as a web developer. I have TRC in place as my partner works in Vietnam.

I will be coming and going out of Vietnam for 1-3 weeks every 2-3 months for work. I am not too sure if I need a work permit or not and current trying to figure out if I need my company to pay me locally or if its ok to continue paying me in the UK.

Many places mentions that a "British Nationals working in Vietnam for 3 months or more require a work permit and an appropriate work visa". Does the 3 months apply each time I come in or apply to a calendar year?

Any help is appreciated.

Hi Kidsta,

I'm not a lawyer so my answer may not accurate.
But because "Any help is appreciated", so here is what I understand:

+ You only need a work permit in Vietnam if you work for a company in Vietnam. If you work for a company outside of Vietnam and that company doesn't affected by Vietnam law, you don't need a work permit.

I've met a foreigner here. He also works as digital marketer for his company which is not in Vietnam, and he just do visa run each 3 months.

+  Going out of Vietnam for 1-3 weeks every 2-3 months is perfect, you may need to do visa run that regular anyway.

+ Where to pay depend on what do you plan to do with the money. If you only need some to spend in Vietnam or you need the whole amount in Vietnam.

If you just need some to spend in Vietnam, perhaps you can open a bank account in Vietnam and transfer the money from your UK bank to it.

It's not easy to open a bank account without a work permit. But I've heard many foreigners was able to open a Timo bank account with valid passport.

Hope it can provide some info. But again, I'm not a lawyer anyway.

Thank you, that sounds very promising. I will try to find out more about the 3months visa and see if it's ok to come in and out of Vietnam every 3 months.
