About the blog directory, I heard that it's wrong to have Mexico in North America.... Should it be in Central America?

Thanks in advance for your help!

dmscvan

Not that I'm an expert or anything, but I think North America is right place to put it.

Gryphon

Nope. Mexico is part of North America. It's part of Latin America too, but we're talking geography, don't we? ;)

Julien

Well on a geographical point of view Mexico is in North America ... but do mexican people consider themselves as north americans or latin americans? :/

Gryphon

They consider themselves as "Americanos", America being the name of the continent and not of a single country. U.S. citizens are officially called "estadunidenses". But then again, the debate has always been ideologic. Economically speaking Mexico is part of the ALENA (another big debate), which is a specifically North American treaty. Historically speaking, for those who don't remember the Alamo ;) , a large part of Southern U.S.A. was Mexican territory until the midst of 19th century.
As you know, the U.S. is currently building that wall to prevent illegal immigrants to cross the border. So, if we say Mexico belongs to Central America, wouldn't that sound like an acceptance to that politics? (no rhetoric question)

(Don't know if I placed my "to's" and "of's" correctly, by the way :D  )

Julien

Really interesting post thanks ;)

Gryphon

Anytime. (but next time let's do it in French ;) )

Gryphon has got it right, as far as I know. Most websites and directories put Mexico in North America. Mexico considers itself part of América, which includes both continents. And they call US and Canadian citizens "norteamericanos", which is a bit contradictory. (At least here in the Yucatan, we hear "norteamericanos" a lot more than "estaduniduenses".

There's a saying that says it best: "Poor Mexico. So far from God, so close to the United States."

Yes, Mexico is in North America. Yes, it's a latin American country, but french speaking canadians could also belong to Latin America, after all... ;-)

There are three nations that make up North America Canada the USA and Mexico. And Mexicans are very aware of this.
It is never wrong to be correct.

there are to diferent subjects to pay attention at, the first one is the geography.. most of the mexican territory is located in the north of the contined wich we call North America,  but politically during several years mexico tried hardly to be look for the leadership of the latin american countries, specially during those times called cold war, looking for a blance among the U.S.A AND SOVIET UNION.. yes mexicans are  an spanish heritage country, mixed with aborigens and sometimes in a derogaroty way  called latinos. most of the north america sub-contined is anglo and when i say most. we have to consider that canada is a anglo and french country heritage.. so for this reason north america see itself like a anglo area missing that french and spanish are there. the example of Quebecois is very interesting becouse despite its strong identity and long intentions to be an independ country they consider themselves as part of the north america culture. contradictory eh ??
other interesting experiences are the spanish and irish integrition to the European comunity... i remember those times when spain and portugal was not  considered as part of  europe...( they called ibericos ) geography vs. cultura and political perceptions !! despite the "savor iberico and mucha fiesta and cerveza senorita" ireland and spain as other "fiesta countries" has suceful been integrated to the European comunity.

Mexicans refused during long time to be part of north america and have any open relationship with the U.S.A due to the bad memories and experiences on the past.  yes they were scarry to be absorved by the United states as Canadians do now !
i said open, even the the mostly 80% of the exportations had a U.S.A destination !! so it was an ambigouos political discurse, inside mexico the politicals speach was no more "invasion from u.s.a" " defending the national soureignty" but the econamical one they depended mostly from the u.s.a economy.

former president Salinas decided to change this rule and  the look to the north better than the south ( and his attitude was such discused either in mexico and and latin america) but aplaused by liberals in Mexico. and so on the country is looking more to  the north america partners and developed countries.

So it is true ! Mexico is not part of the saxon american culture as Quebecois are not ! but things are changing. the developped north of mexico is insisting to be considered as part of North America trade. there is a part of mexicans businessmen who has understood that is better to be friend of the bully of the neighboorhood and in this case of the world !!
Mostly of american and eurpeans ignor that mexico is not only aborigens and a third world country.. there are European, Asian, mid-east  inmigration whom work to build a strong country..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immigration_to_Mexico

yes mexican are well know as 'manana" "ahorita' and "siesta"  as italians or spanish do.. !!  and hollywood represent mexicans as domestic employees  crossing the border to work in the USA,  but who remember 20 years ago when spanish and portugueses where any where in france or swisserland doing same jobs ???

Errrm, in theory I shouldn't be in this debate. Mainly because, when I first started talking to my girlfriend I thought Mexico was in South America! Sorry, sorry, sorry. I could use the excuse that I didn't do geography at school, instead I had to do Latin. I could use the excuse that I was very "europe-centric". But I'm willing to go with I'm a bit crap. Of course, if we ever sit down to play Trivial Pursuit, you now know to ask me geography question at the end!

So, I went and asked my girlfriend (who is Mexican) what she thinks the answer to this question is and she doesn't think - she KNOWS!! Mexico is North American.

And, to be honest, I was a bit surprised to find a topic here (in Central and South America) titled "Mexico".

Dunno if my vote counts but, Mexico is North American!
