Hello Tonyjoh,

I am considering moving to Chennai. How is life in Chennai? Is it an expensive place to live - we look for European standard, being German ;) What do 3 BR apartments or houses cost, approximately?

Also, I read conflicting news about the dirt in Chennai: YouTube has a video "Madras sucks" (where I see dirt everywhere, littered beaches, people shitting on the streets in public), whereas Wikipedia mentions Chennai as one of the cleanest cities in India. Which is correct?

Thank you for advising me and regards, Sabine (Germany)

Hi Sabrine I stayed in chennai for 3 years and it is good place. actually the place is bit calm and not like other fast cities, but very  good transportation and working condition. it is not very costly also. msg me if you wanna know more.

There are no two ways about it, Chennai is a dirty city by European standards.  There is not a civic sense here.  The maids throw the daily garbage out the window like in the middle ages that brought the plague.  Early morning on the beach near the fishing villages, you will see a line of men squatting and then leave a little brown pile.  Try not to step in it.  There is enough garbage especially in vacant lots to give food to the stray dogs, so that is a good thing.  On the other hand, if you visit Calcutta first, Chennai will seem clean.  Many Germans seem to get over the dirt and filth and enjoy living here.  It's not easy, but it's never boring.

Good morning Tony and all,

I am a French from Paris, arrival 5 days ago in Chennai I am suppose to stay here 2 weeks but it is not easy to meet someone here for to visit some places or to discuss. Feeling very alone sometimes.

Waiting your answer,
Have a nice day,
Mélanie.

Your English seems fine.  What are you doing here in Chennai?  There are a lot of French people here.  There is the L'Alliance Francaise on College Road.  You can ask any auto rickshaw driver to take you there.
