Hi,

I accepted a job offer and am planning to move to Essen with family as of this August. I would like to learn about the best state / international schools for kids with learning disabilities.

Will be glad if you can help.

Cheers...

As you have probably already found by googling, there is an international school in Essen and a few others within surrounding cities.
Despite their high fees, international schools do not usually cater well for special needs kids that require more than just disable-friendly access. For that, dedicated German public schools are a better option, which offer good facilities and care. Search for "Inklusion" and "Foerderschule".
You could also contact Essen's "Schulamt" (public school authority), which offers advice in cases like yours:

Private schools in Germany usually also cost at least 1000 Euros a month while public ones are good and free. And it is doubtful private schools will devote the resources for a few individual kids with special problems. The public school system however is required to offer education to people of all levels. Whether this means special programs and assistance in a normal school or attendance at a special school for disabled will have to be determined by the local school system counselors. To facilitate things getting done properly I would suggest one contact the proper authorities as soon as possible and have any relevant medical records and diagnosis available in either German or English.

Here are some links to schools in the Essen area for handicapped children. Unfortunately, all of the sites seem to only be in German. But maybe your child's disabilites are not so severe as to need a special school? But it shows that many public resources go to support special needs, so hopefully you will find a solution.   The first 3 are specialized for mentally handicapped (Schulen für Geistigbehinderte).

Well, I don't mind helping out but all of us who comment on this site would like to see more initiative by people to use Google and find their own information. Thus we can concentrate on the problems people don't manage. I questioned my own efforts to find out this information because I have no idea of what level of disability your child has. This also highlights that people often pose very general questions making it a great if not impossible effort to answer. The more specific the question, the better the chance of getting a fitting response. In the end I figured that even if your child doesn’t need a special school, others that look at this site might. And the results posted should encourage people that such places are available and findable in other areas if people take the time to look in the internet.
