Being a foreigner I read that the minimum paid up capital should be Rm 1 million in order to start a restaurant business in Malaysia. What does this mean?
And if i buy an existing restaurant setup in Malaysia, do I still need to show them Rm 1 million paid up capital?
After starting the business can I come to Malaysia on a work permit?

There are two parts. Buying a business and getting a license and work permit.

Anyone who buys a business is an investor which gives no entitlement to a license or work permit.

The rule for foreigners is the concept of the restaurant should be unique and the premises of a minimum size.

The rm1 million has to be paid into a  business account but can be used to establish the business.

Unless you are a chef its unlikely you will get a work permit or directors visa as you will be viewed as just an investor who does not need to be in Malaysia.

Take a look at  for more information http://malaysiabizadvisory.com

It's possible to have a joint venture with local Malaysians where the laid up capital is only rm350,000. But again you can be seen as just an investor and not be eligible for  work permit
