Retiring in Mauritius

Post new topic

vfoxbaret

Hello,
I am Veronique and I am thinking about retiring in Mauritius but need to know what this entails financially in terms of the Mauritian Government and visas etc.
I would also like to work as a governess/tutor to a family based in Mauritius.
I am thinking about renting a small house/flat in the centre ie Port Louis but close to nice beaches and would be interested to know how easy this is and what it costs pcm?
Also what is the healthcare like in Mauritius, Port Louis, is this private? Do you need health insurance?
Thank you

Anas

Hi vfoxbaret and welcome to https://www.expat.com,

I advise you to read the other threads on the Mauritius forum. You can find answers to some of your questions.
Regarding the time from Port-Louis centre to the beach,it's usually around 30-40 minutes by car.

Best of luck.

Hi,

To retire in Mauritius, you will need a retirement permit and under a retirement permit, you cannot work in Mauritius.

Port Louis and the center of the island are quite far from nice beaches, more than 30 mins drive. The rent vary greatly depending on the location and the type of property...a monthly rent for a flat start as from MUR 15,000. Rent for a house is higher.

Mauritius has both state-sponsored and private healthcare, As an expat, you will definitely need health insurance.

A retirement permit would require that you transfer at least USD30,000 per year for your own expenses x 3 years.  Application cost: MUR20,000 for main permit and MUR5,000 per dependent.

You have to check the Economic Development Board website (EDB)
MOST of the information is found there.
