Hello everybody!

First, a confession of my boredom: It has become a bit of a despair to meet someone to talk in a cafe, (mostly competing with their mobile phones), while drinking myself away with the help of mint-tea - the "Moroccan whisky", as they say. It was lovely for a while, but now is getting on my nerves. I also don't feel very comfortable going out to clubs where the music annoys me for its lack of originality, or spend hours in a restaurant just for the sake of getting social and reveal my impressions onTangier and Moroccans; (that's what most expats do, unfortunately). I need some proper action!

In the past few days I have been thinking about introducing some creative work in the city of Tangier - a truly inspiring place, with an amazing cultural heritage, but also a place where artistic experimentalism and independent initiatives lack terribly, or are totally invisible to me. Apart from the traditional music of Morocco (which is absolutely brilliant), the mainstream  culture in Tangier is depressively similar to anywhere else in the world (from conservative/dodgy clubbing - where you hear pop music, hip hop and tribal house - with a touch of "orientalism" - to obsolete cover-bands playing those same hits that we already know). I believe it  doesn't need to be this way - since there's a lot of interesting people around and amazing spaces begging to be explored.

But I know very few of Morocco, of course. Worth asking here - is there an "underground scene" that I should be aware of? If not: is it possible to create one in Tangier?

I am writing this post with the hope to find other creative minds - not exclusively market-oriented. I would like to meet people who are able to dare and to think differently. I am not looking for social-network narcissists, obsessed about taking photos and maintain their social media addiction for the sake of self-publicity. It would be great to meet some down-to-earth people; nevertheless open to allow their spirit to act freely - in benefit of the world - through art, not mediocrity. (And I would like to stress: I do not seek commercial gain).

I am an 35 year old experimental musician and DJ, also carrying a background on different academic/non-academic fields. My interests are many, but first I would love to hear yours! I am currently working on a musical project that could welcome contributions of all sorts. It would be nice to meet like-minded people, not necessarily only musicians. My aim is NOT to create another virtual group, but a pro-active collective soul". So, lets bring up some ideas together and make them happen in REAL LIFE. Tangier seems to be the ideal place to reinvent yourself!

Get in touch if you identify with this proposal.

*I recon this concept could be somewhat similar to "Temporary Autonomous Zones" (Hakim Bey). Google it!

Hi Anoush,
You might meet creative souls in Tabadoul - rue Magellan

GuestPoster4467

Hey! Thanks. I know the place, and now I am curious to know the owner. Maybe I should give a try again this week. I live few steps from the venue. Even so, I appreciate your help. Best Wishes from Anoush.

Assuming it is safe to do so...

Have you considered wandering the streets, going to local music events, and art exhibitions of whatever type?
You'd be shocked how much you'll learn about local culture and norms in a very short time.

Hey Fred,

Yes, I have been walking around quite a lot. But (maybe) because I am still "seen" as a tourist, they usually recommend me expensive and not-so-interesting bars/clubs/restaurants. From Club 555 to Club Regine, I have tried many different options of nightlife - and ended up quite disappointed in terms of originality. I also tried the Latin festival (few weeks ago) just to discover myself surrounded by another, 10, 15 people - despite the nice music, it was overall empty.

And when I say "underground" I mean something other than pop-culture. I am afraid the best way to find this through sacred rituals and sufi brotherhoods - not to mention well-hidden parties, that might pop-up from time to time.

But I will follow your advice and keep scrutinising Tangier.

You can seek Soumaya Akka’aboune.
She is a former actress whose family always organize an underground musical dance party at her place, Palais Akka’aboune in the Kasbah, about three times a year. The next one will be just after Eid Al Adha this month.
Regretfully I am not in town and would not be able to bring you to this soirée. Probably I can give you an introduction whenever I am in town around the Fall month.
Palais Akka’aboune is the L’American Hotel in the James Bond movie, Specter.
I am sure there are others, that I am not aware of.
Best.
A.

Wow, thanks Abram! This information is gold.
Give me a shout when you come around.

Best,
Anoush.
