How do you deal with the bloodsuckers?

fluffy2560

We don't really have any around here.

At Farkashegy (Budakeszi International*) airport, there are two AN-2** spray planes.  They fly up and down the Danube and particularly Szentendre island and spray the blighters out of existence.  Happens every year.  If there are any nasties around, they must insignificant in numbers.  The southern part of Szentendre is a national park so there's likely to be pools of standing water there, hence the planes.

We do have sometimes a problem with wasps and some kinds of bees.  These things find a way into any gaps in your house or buildings and when there, start destroying it by ripping up the insulation etc.   The wasp infestations mostly die off during the winter but they can be found in unexpected places.  We've found them under the eaves, in the roof of the shed and I even found them inside a tubular metal handle on a table in the shed!

The bees are more difficult to deal with as some bees are protected I believe and of course, they are our friends.   Solitary ground bees are completely harmless but still people kill them.

* it's a joke, it's a grass strip
** one of the best planes in the world - fantastic bit of kit.

We have a lot of mosquitoes here. But mostly just avoid them by not staying out at dusk or early morning when they are most active. Especially around water (lakes, streams, etc.). Sprays are "okay" if one must stay out in those times, but the mosquitoes around here will go right through cloths, so it has to be an all body spray.

Daytime - Very little problem at all
Night when out and about - Wear mosquito repellent
Night in the house - Wear mosquito repellent and give the house a quick spray with mosquito murdering stuff
In bed - - Wear mosquito repellent

In horrible hotels - - Wear mosquito repellent and sleep in a Fred's special sleeping bag.

Hmmmm...West Java  is some way from Eastern Europe.  Nice coffee.

There are mosquitoes out in Asia that bite all day.   If I remember correctly, Dengue Fever occurs in mosquitoes that bite 24x7 whereas Malaria types more enjoy biting dusk to dawn.

A higher risk hereabouts is TBE but there's an effective vaccination for it.

I'm assured garlic and a crucifix work quite well. There was also something about eating a steak with all your heart, but I didn't quite understand what that was about.

Not a problem in North Yorkshire; at least not where we live.  I used to live in Belize where they are a major hazard; a guy used to walk around twice a day with a swing-fog spraying DDT everywhere:

When I first glanced at that, I thought it was one of these, which I am sure everyone would agree is a bit OTT:

Nah - if Swingfog failed, then we used one of these:
