A 5 and a 6.4, both shallow, have just hit North Lombok.
The epicentre looks unpopulated but there's a large business and a couple of small towns very close by.
The shockwave seems to cover most of the island and these being so shallow means the chances of serious damage has to be considered.
Seems there was some panic on Bali judging by Twitter posts. If bad on Bali, fair chance of serious problems on Lombok.
Some reports are saying there was a 6.4 in Bali at around the same time but these are not confirmed
First reports are coming in but still limited.
Seems at least one person has died and there are several injuries, also reports of collapsed buildings.

I suspect there's going to be more but I'd really like to be wrong about that.

Ten confirmed dead and a lot more quakes in quick sucsession.
Seems it was notable as far as Bali according to a conversation I had with someone on that island a little earlier.

A powerful earthquake has struck a popular tourist destination in Indonesia, killing at least 10 people.
The 6.4 magnitude quake hit the central Indonesian island of Lombok just before 07:00 local time (00:00 GMT) on Sunday.
The island attracts tourists from around the world and is located about 40km (25 miles) east of Bali.
Many buildings have been damaged and dozens of people have been injured, officials say.
The US Geological Survey said the epicentre of the earthquake was 50km (31 miles) northeast of the city of Mataram, in northern Lombok.
It was followed by more than 60 smaller earthquakes, with the largest recorded at a magnitude of 5.7.
Seems a lot of hikers are stranded because of landslides.
I've a feeling we're going to hear more bad news over the next few days

A 7 at 10km deep hit about 30 minutes ago.
That big and that shallow is going to be very bad news
Too early for accurate reports as to damage or casualties but there are reports of serious shaking and damage in Bali.
Just had a report of a notable aftershock.
7.0 at 10km deep is going to be very serious.
Just on sky news now tsunami warning issued
Tsunami is possible as it's on land but close to the coast.
However, the last two in the same place didn't cause them.
The BBC and many other stations have picked the news off the wire

Live reporting now with Indonesian channels looks a mess

Reports 10 to 13 cm tsunami - small but still a lot of water so likely damage. Let's hope all the people got out of the way in time.
BBC Indonesia are now reporting 38 dead and lots injured, saying many were head injuries caused by falling debris, Looks like building damage is severe.

Approaching 100 deaths now, very sad
It's likely to get a lot worse as the day goes on, more so as trapped people are in even greater danger because of big aftershocks.
I was in Turkey in 95 or 96 and felt the one from Russia, was also my first experience of a very small tsunami (zero damage but fascinating to see)
Much greater one in 99 in Istanbul area shook many parts of the continent
My first quake was when I lived in Wonosobo. The whole house wobbled like a wobbly thing on beer.
I was sitting on the toilet at the time, so my underwear was saved.

The clear up is under way and the number of victims is rising as the rubble is cleared.
Another shallow one in the last hour
a 5.9 in about the same place

Did you feel them Fred?
We felt both of them here in Ubud, but the second one was much more noticeable.
I guess these are too late to be called after shocks?
My heart goes out to those folks in Lombok. I can easily see how this sort of constant seismic activity could drive a person nuts.
Take care and a belated Happy Independence Day!
Cheers!
Not a thing here (I'm more than a little happy to report) but the people on Lombok must be in a terrible state.
Good grief...and yet another one just a short while ago. This one felt stronger than the one around 11AM today. Just checking, they are initially calling this one...again in Lombok at 6.3.
And here we go again...as I'm typing!
This is NO fun!
Hope you're alright down there.
Lombok has had another four, all above 5 and all shallow.
The biggest was:

I can only imagine the state the people of Lombok are in at the moment.
It's interesting, in a cultural aspect sort of way, being in a small traditional Balinese village during these quakes.
The Balinese belief, or folk lore, is that the earth is held together by two dragons. It's said that earth quakes come when the dragons doze off or fall asleep. So, in the villages, whenever there is an earth quake all the people commence banging on things like drums, pots, or even clapping their hands...all in an effort to wake up the dragons and get them to regain their grip on the world.
Cheers, my friend!
I suppose, in a way, it is two dragons.
Sadly, they're still asleep

There's going to be a huge need for mental health care specialists in Lombok for quite a while. These tremors just won't quit.
Sleep disorders, anxiety, PTSD...you name it. This of course all on top of Gunung Agung being active recently for a number of months.
