Wildlife Conservation in Hungary?

Post new topic

petewsh61

I am looking for persons interested in wildlife conservation in Hungary.  I am looking for expats and Hungarians who know something about Hungarian biodiversity, the administration of Hungarian natural areas, and the types of challenges Hungarian biodiversity faces.  I am on the faculty of UMass, Amherst where I specialize on bird and mammal conservation and behavior.  This summer I am on a fact-finding mission to learn some background information and make some professional and amateur contacts.  I am collecting information on Hungarian biodiversity conservation for several classes I teach and for potential research projects in collaboration with Hungarian biologists.

If you don't fit the description above, but know someone who does, I'd be grateful if you put me in contact with them.

I am also looking for fluent expat or native Hungarian speakers to practice my Hungarian with who are willing to help make sure I can correctly pronounce the names of birds, mammals, landscape terms, etc., in Hungarian.  I do speak fairly fluent Hungarian and can read a little, but I need someone to help me improve my abilities.  You provide your voice, I'll buy the coffee, beer, or palinka.  There is the possibility of some paid tutoring.

Additionally I'd love to meet people interested in birding, plant id, etc., who go on hikes near Budapest.

If you are unable to meet, then I would be interested in email correspondence with persons who can answer some of my questions.

I will be in Hungary from May 18th until June 29th.  I will be making frequent visits to the Hungarian national parks during my stay, but I will spend most of my time in Budapest.

My blog on Hungarian biodiversity doesn't have enough entries (only one so far) to make it on the blog-list at Expats, but you can check it out at budabirds.blogspot.com

Hello Peter!

I guess I can help you with the pronounciation practice. Maybe you can help me practicing English language too. :)

Sophy, that would be a fair trade!

I've got a friend near Eger who worked for the UK Police for almost 32 years, mainly in animal protection and has lived here for several years. He's a bird expert and runs bird watching tours around the Bukk and Hortobagy and is out in the forests or wetlands almost daily. He sounds like the type of person you're looking for. I'll contact him and see if he's willing to help.
