Lost In JKT.

Hi all,

I know this question might have been asked before and I have tried all the usual avenues so I am just reaching out for some more info.

Long story short, I moved to Jakarta with my partner in May because of his job and since then, the relationship has ended. Jakarta wasn't exactly my first choice for relocation so now that I am on my own here, I am feeling a bit lost. I have a good group of colleagues at work but I am looking for people to hang out with/travel with at the weekends. I really want to give living here a shot before throwing in the towel, so I would like to see if I can get my own tribe going over here.

If anyone has any tips on how to meet people in the Big D, then let me know! Thanks a lot!

Fred

Jakarta is a big city but there are a lot of good people there.
As with any city, it's often harder to cement good relationships unless you're just looking for bar buddies.
Workmates are always a good start and even if nothing comes of them, knocking around with them is likely to mean you'll meet new people.
You do have one other problem, you can't leave the country without an exit permit from your employer, and that will mean either finishing your contract or negotiating a fee to cover their costs in getting you to Indonesia and your work permit, the latter being US$1,200.

Hi sorry to hear about your breakup. Being a single expat woman is hard. I have seen many expat female friends give up after a year.

Best bet is expat clubs, womens groups, meetup.com for activities you enjoy and internations. Successful expats are independent types comfortable alone and in getting out to meet people.

And of course it typically takes 15 months to get over a major emotional issue. Plus culture shock will be kicking in the same time. Double whammy. Just be aware of this.

Good luck and just make the best it.
