Hello,

End of year holidays around the world are such an exciting time of the year, with holiday food playing a big part of the traditions and celebrations.

What are some traditions surrounding holiday meals in Cambodia?

Tell us about a few of the traditional holiday dishes and meals in Cambodia.

What are some of your favourites?

Are the food that are consumed during the festive season easy to prepare at home, or do most people buy them at the store?

Are holiday meals a big family festivity in Cambodia?

Is there a general budget that people allocate to holiday meals?

Hello Priscilla.

Good question.

As Cambodia is mainly Buddhist [95% of the population] their New Year is celebrated in April.

But the general New Year is celebrated too, even Christmas sees decorated shops but to me that's a commercial thing.

Neither Khmer nor the general New Year have special dishes. Cambodian people like to gather and eat a variety of food. Many dishes are prepared with different tastes, from spicy to sweet-sour to sweet.
Special dishes are e.g. fried ginger, Kampot pepper, mango salad and a variety of insects.

Rice wine is a favourite with or without meals, sometimes they drink locally brewed too high in methanol/ethanol rice wine and people get sick or even die.

That's about it.
