Hello all.  I'll be 42 in 2020, and am planning on moving to Bulgaria to homestead and live off of about $1400 a month pension with my wife.  We both could work, but would rather focus on building a homestead.

We are coming to Bulgaria over the christmas season, and would love to meet up with anyone who has moved there either from the US or western Europe.  We will be touring the whole country by car, from Sofia to Varna.

Welcome Dylanc78!

Moving from the US to Bulgaria is a big step and planning it in advance + taking a tour is a wise approach. Congrats on that.
Basically 1400 USD per month is sufficient to live comfortably in Bulgaria (about 2380 BGN), especially if you own a house or a flat.
Building a homestead will require careful selection of region and land, which is better to do in the Spring/Summer season. I would suggest that you plan at least two more visits, so that you could get a better understanding of the climate of the selected region/s or be able to select one from several pre-selected places.

And for the Christmass season you can visit Borovetz, Velingrad, Sapareva banya, Koprivshtitza, Pamporovo .... Plovdiv, Hissarya, etc :))

these are ski and SPA resorts, just for fun and relaxing. Plovdiv is different - this is the second biggest city and is considered to be the Cultural Capital of Bulgaria.

Hi Dylan

I agree with Kristian. It is a wise move to visit first before actually moving (you'd be surprised as to how many foreigners buy something through the internet without knowing what they are doing) but it would be better during summer. For one because of the nice weather, but also because a lot of expats come over in the summer but go back to their homeland during winter, so networking and local activities are easier during that time.
I just spent three months this year in Bulgaria renting (Aug-Oct) and will be moving permanently to Zaya (a hamlet in the countryside not far from Veliko Tarnovo in the center of Bulgaria) next year in April. You and your wife are welcome to visit should you be in the area.

Actually I have started the process of making homestead in Bulgaria.
Renting an apartment for a year at 300 Leva per month. About 180 dollars. Stayed there for 3 months visa free while looking around for my future home.
All the advertisement was more or less photoshop. They hide ugly parts like everybody does.
I am trying learn house repair.

Are you sure you can buy land?

I could be wrong, but, the last I heard, you need to be a citizen here to either own land.

You will want to check on that while you are here.

Hi, I moved to BG in May this year with my wife, after many visits looking for a house in different areas.  I have American friends who live a short distance from where we live and they have lived in BG for many years, so could possibly give very good advice.  We moved from the UK  to live here permanently all year round.  As I am a handy person I have learnt a great deal about our house and carrying out repairs etc. I can tell you that things are much different here regarding house repairs than in the UK.  We would love to help you, but we will be away for 5 days over Christmas holiday

Non-EU foreigners can easily set up a LLC to purchase regulated land such as houses with gardens.

The only issue comes if they want to buy agricultural or unregulated land.
