Going to Ecuador with my bmx bike from Miami

Start by calling the airline. There could be an additional charge for it.

The airlines often charge an additional charge and have rules for transport. I am taking my trike in a massive duffel bag, packed in bubble wrap in July. I have flown with to Europe twice and did have to pay a tax or something similar. Tell me what happens at customs in Ecuador.

If the airline deal doesn't work out, an alternative might be shipping the bike from Miami to South America -- for instance, Miami to Cartagena, Colombia, with Logistic Cargo (logisticargo.net).

Theoretically, you could ride the bike from Cartagena to Ecuador after obtaining a personal 90-day tourist stamp in Colombia and then the relevant visa-related 'permiso' for the bike.

FYI, do not drive long distances in Colombia at night on a moto or in any vehicle.

That would be an epic trip, riding Cartagena to Ecuador, on a BMX bicycle.  Sure, people have bicycled long distances, but still...
