Keeping fit in Oman

Post new topic

Hello everyone,

Keeping fit during your time in Oman is of utmost importance. How about sharing with us and your fellow expats how you keep healthy in your host country?

What are your daily health hacks in Oman?

Do you exercise regularly? What is your go-to sport?

Do you manage to keep your diet healthy and balanced? How easy is it to maintain a balanced diet in Oman? Are you able to find organic products easily?

Are there national or local incentives to foster a healthy lifestyle: sensitisation campaigns, sports infrastructure etc. ?

How much of your monthly budget is dedicated to keeping fit?

Please share your experience,

Priscilla

Hi Everyone.

Since being in Oman for the last 18 months, I've been really impressed with the focus on fitness from the recent Muscat Marathon, triathlon's, the up coming Ironman  to all the gym options in Muscat. If you are into your exercise there is something for everyone.  The best gyms do seem to be based in Muscat, and living near to Nizwa does limit my public gym options,  but I make the most of hotel gyms when in Muscat, and in the cooler month's love to go running.

For tips on healthy living and recipes that are easily made in Oman why not check out my website.

These are all recipes I have developed whilst living in Oman focused on healthy and accessible food designed to help you lead a healthier more balanced lifestyle :)

Have a good week!

My favourite form of exercise is swimming! I have a pool membership at one of the big hotels and swim for an hour every day since it is near my home. It is definitely worth the cost, which works out to about 10 rials per month. On weekends I regularly take long walks along the beach at Qurum or in Qurum Park, especially now that it is cooler. Our building has a gym and my husband uses the equipment there every day. There are some challenging dunes to climb but I haven’t done it yet. I used to like always taking the stairs to reach my flat in my previous building, but my current building does not have lighting so it is hazardous to use the stairs. Such a dangerous practice! It is not hard to find ways to keep active here! I like to walk to do my errands whenever possible but unfortunately the city is not generally pedestrian friendly.

Healthy food is affordable and available, for the most part, if you don’t regularly buy expensive imported produce. While organic is available, I do not buy it. Healthy foods such as pulses are inexpensive but you need to have the time and interest to use them in recipes. We cook almost all our meals ourselves, preparing fresh salads, vegetables and reasonable sized portions of fish and chicken, sometimes beef. We often freeze extra portions of foods that take a lot of effort to prepare, like soups, and enjoy them later. We eat lots of fresh fruit when we want something sweet. I don’t tend to eat berries often since they are expensive. Instead, oranges, bananas and apples are eaten regularly. Good quality whole grain breads can be found at Carrefour. Cheese is my indulgence but it is expensive in most countries!

Keeping oneself fit in Oman is not an easy task, particularly due to lifestyle. Most of commuters ,use car  to travel to their work places as well as other activities. Offices, homes and schools are fully rather irrationally Air-conditioned. Most of Food available at stores are frozen, as Oman don't have much of agri products of its own.

Due to such conditions , exercising regular is a must, hence gyms & sports activities are comparatively expensive. The most cheap and easy way of daily exercising is walk along the pathways  & parks , and scene of such can be witnessed many places during evening.
