Bag theft from hotel - need suggestions

Post new topic

Hi Members,

I landed in Brussels yesterday with family and reached the hotel reception(Grand Place area). All my bags were kept together in the reception, while I was busy signing the checkin formalities with my daughter sleeping in my arms , My laptop bag containing my personal documents and electronic gadgets which was beside the other trolleys got stolen from the lobby . We checked the cctv footage together with the hotel manager after making a intimation to the police and police demanding a video clip. We found a person tail gated me while I was entering the hotel and waited for 3-5 mins trying to figure out when /how to steal my stuff. As soon as I left the luggage and proceeded 3-4 steps ahead towards reception for formalities, he took my bag and fled to no one’s notice, until I started picking up my bag and found my missing bag. Luckily my passport and bank cards were with me. Need a few suggestions:
1. I lost my work permit, can we make a request to re-issue the work permit with the police report copy?
2. I lost my full family Birth certificate, marriage certificate , my Educational certificates and few other documents. So During RP registration for my wife and kids, can we produce a xerox copy of the documents and the police report copy stating originals were stolen?
3. Any other formalities/information if the thieves might have taken the gadgets and threw the bag with documents or any lost and found desk near grand place.

Thank you for your help and suggestions.

sorry about that...

You've lost your work permit but you still have your passport?
Your work permit should be written on your visa D, right? Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't understand what you mean by work permit... Resident card?

Well anyway:

1) The police station is 200m away from the grand place, so go there and tell them what you've lost, they'll write a paper that will be needed for the immigration. (KEEP IT! + copy for your insurance if you have!)
Then on Monday, call the foreign office 02/793.80.00
They might hang out if you don't speak FR/NL, so maybe ask the cops for help, they can be friendly! (or at least the receptionist at the hotel! They speak at least FR/NL/EN and it happens in THEIR hotel! that's the least they can do!)

2) Completely lost... you might need to go to the indian embassy in BXL to get new certified copies, but you won't get your educational certificate for sure.
Immigration will take the paper from the cops into account, so don't worry too much, through you'll need to get them back in some way.

3) Give your phone / accommodation to the cops... through don't have high hopes and expect too much...

In some kind of way, you're lucky you didn't lost your passport...
Trust me, there's nothing more difficult than proving you're "yourself" in another country...............
Good luck and sorry again :(

Alex, a very helpful answer !

My 2 cents to add to it.

Work permit is a work authorisation for foreigners. It is a card printed with some details. It is issued by labour ministry.

1. For the work permit, do inform your employer. As it is them who applied for it in the labour ministry, they know normally whom to approach. OR They can guide you which office to contact, to get a copy issued.
2. Worst case - You may have to get new copies issued from India and get them apostilled again. Birth certificates in India - new copies can be issued without much hassle.
3. Nothing more. As Alex mentioned, don't keep high hopes.

Thank you for the response, I still have my passport and Visa D with which I can survive sometime.

Already went to police station same day and got the report about list of missing items, visited couple of times and checked with them, even though CCTV footage has some details about the thief, they did not seem to be to much interested in finding the thief , nor the baggage.

SInce I have lost my dependents Birth and Marriage certificates, my family might not be able to get the Resident permit as these are mandated documents, still my EMployer is in touch with the authorities if scanned copies of the original will help to get a Resident Permit.

Thanks for the response,
I have recieved a duplicate copy of my work permit and in process to re-issue the Birth and Marriage Certificates(Not sure how much would be success!).

Is it possible to get in contact with the authority that issued those certificates to your dependents? They could issue attestations for them. Warm Hugs
