Relocating to mauritius

Hi all

I am from south Africa, my husband and two kids and myself are looking to relocate to mauritius.

We would like to start a business there. I plan is to obtain citizenship eventually.

I have a few questions.

1. If my husband starts the business, does myself and two kids under 18 automatically become residents there?

2. What is the difference between permanent residence and citizenship. I have heard permanent residence is only 10 years? Is this correct.

3. Are we allowed to buy property there? If so, what's the minimum amount to allow us residency with the property.

Thank you

Hi,

1. Yes, you and your 2 kids (until they reach 24 years of age) will be his dependents and you will be granted residency accordingly.

2. PR is basically just a permit that allows you to stay in Mauritius for a maximum period of 10 years and which is renewable if you satisfy the conditions imposed.

Citizenship means you are granted constitutional and civil rights and privileges just like any other Mauritian citizen. 2 different things but one leading to the other; PR usually paves the way to citizenship if the terms and conditions of your stay are respected.

3. You can buy apartments valued at more than MUR 6 million and located in a building of more than 2 storeys.
You can also buy properties in realty schemes like RES/IRS/PDS/IHS and in 'Smart Cities'.
That said, only an investment of more than $500,000 in any of the above schemes will grant you residency as long as you own the property.

When the child reaches age 24, do they have to leave Mauritius even if the parents have permanent residence there? Thanks

Yes.

Unless they find their own ways to stay long term in Mauritius; like looking for a job and applying for an Occupation Permit, invest money and set up a business activity or enroll as students in a local institution.
