Hello, my husband is hoping to spend 6 months in Portugal from October and I hope to join him for 3 months. We live in Scotland and are waiting to see what happens with Brexit to see how it will affect travel. At the moment however I believe that my visit (up to 3 months) would be a tourist visa (if required at all) but we are confused as to what type of visa my husband would need to allow a stay of 6 months. He is taking early retirement and just wants to spend time in the Algarve relaxing and enjoying the sunshine. Can anyone advise? Thanks in advance!

Hello.   I am Scots and have recently moved to Portugal as a Resident.  You don't say whether you are both UK Nationals or not.  If you are then no Visa required...free movement of people .. and unlikely to change short term so Brexit is probably of little interest with that respect. You are still an EU National and Portugal have proven to be very understanding with this respect.  If you are non EU nationals (as my girlfriend is) then you will require a Schengen Visa which will allow you a stay up to 3 months maximum (FYI a UK Visa allows 6 months).
Happy to help or advise further if of interest.

Hi, thank you for your quick reply! We are both Scottish so potentially he should be ok then? Do you have any advice on how to go about applying for the visa? Sorry! We are total novices and your help will be very much appreciated! It is Sesmarias that we are heading to which is very near Albufeira I believe.
